Softball Earns OAC Split with Heidelberg

TIFFIN, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team split a rescheduled road Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against Heidelberg University on Frann's Field.  The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Tuesday, April 12 but was postponed due to inclement weather.

BW (10-18, 3-9 OAC), who snapped a six game losing skid, won the opener in dramatic fashion by a final score of 7-5.  The Yellow Jackets took an early 1-0 lead before Heidelberg (20-8, 7-5 OAC) scored five runs in the sixth to take a 5-1 lead.  BW exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh and held on to take the victory.   The Student Princes won the second game in five innings by a final score of 11-2.

In game one, the Yellow Jackets scored seven runs on 12 hits as they plated one run in the second and the game-winning six runs in the seventh.   The Student Princes scored five runs on 13 hits as it tallied all of its runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The BW offense was powered by freshman first baseman Alexis Boledovic (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark) as she had a career-high three hits.  Boledovic was 3-for-4 with a career-best two runs batted-in (RBIs). Freshman third baseman Paige Loveless (Mechanicsburg) had multiple hits as she went 2-for-4.  

In addition, the Yellow Jackets got a base knock each from junior All-OAC second baseman DJ Rogers (Warren/Champion), junior designated player Mackenzie Nelsen (Powell/Dublin Scioto), sophomore left fielder Lena Kortis (Massillon/Perry), sophomore right fielder Sierra Bennett (Tallmadge), freshman shortstop Erica English (North Olmsted) freshman catcher Sami Minor (North Royalton) and freshman center fielder Abbie Thompson (Madison).  Kortis notched the lone extra base knock for BW and scored two runs.  Bennett had two RBIs and a run scored and Nelsen had one RBI. 

In the circle, junior Academic All-OAC pitcher Erica Morgan (Brook Park/Midpark) picked up her seventh win of the season as she allowed five runs on 13 hits with two strikeouts in seven innings pitched. 

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored two runs on seven hits as it plated one run in the first and third. Heidelberg scored 11 runs on 12 hits as it tallied one run in the first, two in the second and eight in the third.

The BW offense was led by Boledovic and English as both went 2-for-2.  English also scored both runs.  Kortis, Loveless and Thompson had the three other base knocks while Kortis had one RBI.

In the circle, Morgan suffered the loss as she allowed three runs (none earned) on five hits in two innings pitched. Nelsen pitched the final two innings and allowed eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, April 20 when they host an OAC doubleheader against Ohio Northern on the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field at 3 p.m. BW remains at home on Thursday, April 21 when it hosts a non-conference doubleheader against the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg at 3:30 p.m.
