B-W Softball Team Splits Key OAC Doubleheader at Rival John Carroll

BEREA, OHIO--The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team split a doubleheader with Ohio Athletic Conference and cross-town rival John Carroll University today (Saturday, April 10, 2010) in University Heights. The Yellow Jackets won the opener, 2-1, but dropped the nightcap, 3-2.

With the split, the Jackets move to 13-8 overall and 4-2 in the OAC. JCU moves to 12-12 overall and 3-3 in the OAC.

In game one, John Carroll got on the board early with a single run in the bottom of the first, but the Yellow Jackets evened the score in the third when junior catcher Tanya Davis (Hinckley/Medina Highland) singled and senior shortstop Mallory Kobak (Independence) scored on an error. B-W then picked up the winning run in the sixth when junior first baseman Katrina Resek (Strongsville) hit her first homerun of the season. 

Reigning OAC Pitcher of the Week Sarah Baker (Mentor/Lake Catholic) was stellar on the mound. She logged the complete game and allowed only four hits and two walks and struck out four.

The Yellow Jackets outhit the Blue Streaks 8-3. Davis and Kobak were each 2-for-4 and Kobak stole a base.

In game two, B-W scored twice in the second when Baker scored on a bunt by sophomore centerfielder Meredith Fogg (Sandusky/Senior) and Resek scored on a fielder's choice by sophomore second baseman Katie Finley (Vermilion). The Blue Streaks tied the score in their half of the inning with a pair of RBI singles and scored the winner on an error in the fourth.

Baker (11-4) tossed a complete game and allowed three earned runs on six hits and three walks and struck out four.

At the plate, Davis was 1-for-3 with two stolen bases. Fogg was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Yellow Jackets open an eight-game home stand this Monday, April 12 with a non-conference doubleheader versus Kenyon College at 3:30 p.m. at Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field in Berea. B-W also hosts OAC rivals Mount Union College on Wednesday (Apr. 14) and Ohio Northern University on Saturday (Apr. 17) before entertaining Allegheny College on Sunday (Apr. 18).
