B-W Softball Team Splits Doubleheader with Kenyon; Davis Homers Twice and Sets Doubles Record

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team split a doubleheader with Kenyon College this afternoon (Monday, April 12, 2010) at Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field in Berea. Junior catcher Tanya Davis (Hinckley/Medina Highland) highlighted the twin bill with two homeruns and tied the B-W career record for doubles.

Kenyon won the opener, 4-1, but B-W took the nightcap, 10-2 in six innings, to improve to 14-9 overall.

In game one, Kenyon used a pair of two-out hits to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. In the sixth inning, Davis doubled to tie the school career-record (41) then scored when sophomore Sarah Baker (Mentor/Lake Catholic) reached on an error. The Ladies added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh with another two-out hit and a bases-loaded walk.

Junior Mackenzie Rohrbacher (Sandusky/Senior) started and had her best outing of the season. She logged the seven-inning complete game, allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits and four walks, and struck out three to drop to 2-4 overall.

Junior first baseman Katrina Resek (Strongsville) led the Jackets at the plate going 2-for-3.

In game two, the Yellow Jacket bats awoke to score three times in the first inning. Davis and Baker highlighted the frame with back-to-back homeruns. B-W picked up two more in the third when Davis hit another homer for her team-leading sixth of the season. Resek added a long ball of her own in the bottom of the fourth and senior shortstop Mallory Kobak (Independence) tripled home sophomore second baseman Katie Finley (Vermilion). In the fifth, Kenyon scored twice and the Jackets scored once on a Baker sacrifice fly. B-W then added their final two runs with RBI singles from senior outfielder Chelsea Saunders (Medina/Highland) and senior third baseman Megan Coyne (Valley City/Keystone).

Baker started and tossed the six-inning complete game to improve to 12-4 overall. She allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks and struck out two.

At the plate, Davis was 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Kobak was 1-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs.

The Yellow Jackets continue an eight-game home stand with a key stretch of Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheaders beginning with rival Mount Union College on Wednesday, April 14 at 3:30 p.m. in Berea.
