B-W Softball Team Picks Up Key Sweep of Otterbein on Seniors' Day in Berea; Baker Sets Wins Record

BEREA, OHIO-- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team picked up a key doubleheader sweep of Otterbein College on Seniors' Day (Wednesday, April 28, 2010) at Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field in Berea. The Yellow Jackets won game one, 3-0, behind a brilliant pitching performance by sophomore Sarah Baker (Mentor/Lake Catholic) and took the nightcap, 9-0 in five innings.
 
The Yellow Jackets improve to 21-15 overall and 7-7 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and stay in the race for a spot in the upcoming OAC Tournament. Otterbein falls to 7-25 overall and 2-14 in the OAC.
 
In game one, B-W scored once in the first when senior outfielder Chelsea Saunders (Hinckley/Medina Highland) singled, stole second, and scored on a single by senior third baseman Megan Coyne (Valley City/Keystone). The Jackets added a run in the third when junior catcher Tanya Davis (Hinckley/Medina Highland) singled and eventually scored on a fielder's choice by Baker. B-W picked up another run in the sixth when Coyne reached on an error and came around to score on a Baker single.

On the mound, Baker dominated for her 19th complete game and third shutout of the season. She took a no-hitter into the sixth and only allowed two hits and two walks and struck out four.
 
At the plate, Coyne was 2-for-3 with a run batted-in, Davis was 2-for-3, and Baker was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
 
In game two, the B-W bats came alive and scored five in the first and four in the second. Sophomore second baseman Katie Finley (Vermilion) was 2-for-3 with a two-run homerun, her first of the season. Baker was 1-for-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs. Davis was 1-for-1 with a walk, a hit by pitch and two runs.

Baker started and threw two shutout innings to improve to 18-9. The 18 wins is a B-W single-season record.  Junior Mackenzie Rohrbacher (Sandusky/Senior) pitched the final three innings and struck out three to record her first save of the season.
 
The Yellow Jackets are back in action tomorrow with a make-up OAC twinbill at Wilmington College at 3:30 p.m. in Wilmington. B-W then closes out the regular season at rival Muskingum University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in New Concord.
