B-W Softball Team Swept by OAC Rival Mount Union

BEREA, OHIO-- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team lost both games of a doubleheader with Ohio Athletic Conference rival Mount Union College this afternoon (Wednesday, April 14, 2010) at Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field in Berea. The Yellow Jackets lost game one, 3-1, and dropped the nightcap, 9-6.

B-W falls to 14-11 overall and 4-4 in the OAC. Mount Union improves to 17-11 overall and 5-3 in the OAC.

In game one, Mount Union took advantage of two B-W errors and scored unearned runs in the first and third innings. The Yellow Jackets got on the board in their half of the third when sophomore pitcher Sarah Baker (Mentor/Lake Catholic) singled home senior outfielder Mallory Kobak (Independence).

B-W also had scoring threats in the fourth and fifth but was unable to cash in and Mount Union added an insurance score in the sixth to secure the 3-1 win.

For the game, Kobak was 2-for-4 with a triple and Baker was 2-for-3. As a team, the Yellow Jackets left nine runners on base and committed four errors.

On the mound, Baker was the tough-luck loser. She allowed only one earned run on four hits and did not walk a batter in seven innings of work. Mount Union's Bre Willis allowed one earned run on eight hits and struck out five to pick up the complete-game win.

In game two, B-W scored one in the first when senior leftfielder Chelsea Saunders (Medina/Highland) doubled and later scored on an error. Mount Union came right back with four runs on four hits and an error in the second and got a grandslam in the third to move ahead 8-1.

After a single Raider run in the fourth, the Yellow Jackets pulled to within 9-3 when Kobak doubled home two in the bottom of the inning. B-W then made things interesting in the seventh when Baker doubled home one and later scored on a single by sophomore second baseman Katie Finley (Vermilion). The Jackets then got to within 9-6 on a sacrifice fly by senior outfielder Lauren Sabolik (Strongsville), but eventually left the bases loaded to end the game.

Baker started and allowed seven earned runs in just two and a third-innings to fall to 12-6. Junior Mackenzie Rohrbacher (Sandusky/Senior) threw four and a third innings in relief and allowed only one run.

The Yellow Jackets continue an eight-game home stand with an OAC doubleheader versus rival and first-place Ohio Northern University on Saturday, April 17 in Berea.
