B-W Softball Team Loses Twice to Fourth-Ranked ONU in Berea

BEREA, OHIO-- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team lost an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader to rival and fourth-ranked (Division III National Fast-Pitch Coaches Association) Ohio Northern University today (Saturday, April 17, 2010) at Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field in Berea. The Polar Bears won game one, 5-1, and captured the nightcap, 15-0, in five innings.

With its two losses, B-W falls to 14-13 overall and 4-6 in the OAC and has now lost four straight games. ONU is now 27-1 overall and 10-0 in the OAC and has won 24 straight games.

In game one, the Polar Bears jumped on top 1-0 in the top of the first inning, but the Yellow Jackets scored a run of their own to tie it 1-1 in the bottom of the frame as senior shortstop Mallory Kobak (Independence) singled, stole second base for her 24th theft of the season and scored when All-OAC and All-Central Region catcher Tanya Davis (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) singled for her 27th run batted-in this season. ONU then took control of the game with three runs in the fourth on three hits and added an unearned run in the fifth to lead 5-1.

At the plate, B-W managed just the two first inning base hits by Kobak and Davis. On the mound, sophomore Sarah Baker (Mentor/ Lake Catholic) received the loss to fall to 12-7 overall this season as she allowed eight hits and five runs (four earned), struck out two Polar Bear batters and walked three.

In game two, the Polar Bears dominated as they scored once in the first and five more in each of the second and third frame to gain an 11-0 lead en route to the five-inning mercy-rule game.

At the plate, B-W had five hits, including a double by Baker.  On the mound, junior Mackenzie Rohrbacher (Sandusky/ Senior) started and took the loss to fall to 2-5 overall.

Today's doubleheader was the first of four straight doubleheaders for the Yellow Jackets at the Fairgrounds in Berea. Tomorrow, Sunday, April 18, B-W hosts non-league foe Allegheny (Pa.) College at 1:00 p.m., then hosts cross-town foe Ursuline College on Monday, April 19 at 3:30 p.m. and ends the string of games on Tuesday, April 20 when it travels to Tiffin to play OAC-rival Heidelberg University at 3:30 p.m.  The final home doubleheader of the season is Seniors' Day on Wednesday, April 28 against Otterbein College at 3:30 p.m.
