Yellow Jacket Softball Team Splits an OAC Twinbill at #13 Capital; Lose Game One and Win Game Two

BEREA, OHIO-- After a 15-day layoff, the Baldwin-Wallace College softball team returned to action and split its Ohio Athletic Conference opening doubleheader this afternoon (Saturday, March 27, 2010) with rival and 13th-ranked (NFCA) Capital University at Clowson Field in Columbus. The Yellow Jackets lost a heartbreaker, 4-3, in the opener, but rebounded to overcome a 2-0 deficit and win the second game, 8-2.

In game one, B-W jumped on the board early when senior third baseman Megan Coyne (Valley City/ LaGrange Keystone) belted a three-run homerun in the top of the first inning. Capital scored a single run in the third and rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn the 4-3 victory. The Jackets were held to just two hits over the final six innings.

Sophomore Sarah Baker (Mentor/ Lake Catholic) started and pitched six strong innings and allowed four earned runs to drop to 4-2 this season. Capital's Brittany Stefano allowed two earned runs and struck out five in seven innings to improve to 13-1 overall.

In game two, the Crusaders scored once in the first and third before B-W tied the game with run-scoring singles by junior first baseman Katrina Resek (Strongsville) and sophomore outfielder Meredith Fogg (Sandusky/ Senior). The Yellow Jackets then blew the game open with three in the sixth inning and three more insurance tallies the seventh. Junior catcher Tanya Davis (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) highlighted the final inning with a two-run homer.

Baker started and earned the complete-game win. She allowed nine base hits, two runs (both earned), struck out two and walked two to improve to 5-2 overall.

The Yellow Jackets, now 7-4 overall, are back in action with their 2010 home opener on Tuesday, March 30 versus The College of Wooster in a doubleheader at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field in Berea at 3:30 p.m. Tomorrow's originally scheduled DH at Rio Grande has been CANCELLED due to pending weather.
