Men's Volleyball Drops Three-Set Match Against No. 16 UC Santa Cruz

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Baldwin Wallace University men's volleyball team competed in the second day of the CLU Invitational hosted by California Lutheran University as they fell to the No. 16 nationally ranked University of California-Santa Cruz by a score of 3-0 inside Soiland Arena.

BW Leaders (8-10, 2-0 MCVL)

  • Senior All-Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League outside hitter Michael Beard (Hilliard/Darby) was the game-leading attacker with 14 kills and added four digs, one block assist, and one ace
  • Freshman libero Jack Sullenberger (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) totaled five digs and two assists
  • Senior All-MCVL setter Brandon Long (Hinckley/Metea Valley [Ill.]) recorded exactly 35 assists in his second straight game and had a team-high nine digs
  • Freshman outside hitter Owen Huynh (Loveland) tallied seven kills
  • Sophomore middle hitter Colby Whiteside (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) finished with a team-high three block assists and added four kills
  • Freshman outside hitter Daniel Latham (Westerville/Westerville Central) had 11 kills, four digs, one block assist, and one ace

UC Santa Cruz Leaders (11-8)

  • Junior outside hitter Nico Espinoza led the Banana Slugs with 11 kills
  • Freshman setter Logan Taylor assisted 21 times
  • Junior setter Jalen Suwa recorded a team-high eight digs

First Set (UCSC 25-22)

  • BW led in kills 14-10
  • Yellow Jackets hit .233
  • Banana Slugs hit .261

Second Set (UCSC 25-16)

  • Each team had nine kills
  • Yellow Jackets hit -.036
  • Banana Slugs hit .412

Third Set (UCSC 29-27)

  • UCSC led in kills 21-17
  • Yellow Jackets hit .343
  • Banana Slugs hit .462
