No. 18 Men's Volleyball Drops Three at Statesmen Volleyball Classic

GENEVA, N.Y. - The No. 18 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University men's volleyball team competed at the Statesmen Volleyball Classic hosted by Hobart (N.Y.) College where it dropped three non-conference matchups against Hobart, No. 16 nationally ranked Misericordia (Pa.) University, and No. 1 nationally ranked Wentworth Institute of Technology inside Bristol Gymnasium.

BW (5-4) opened the tri-match on Friday by falling to Hobart (10-4) 3-1 by scores of 22-25, 21-25, 25-23, and 15-25. On Saturday, the Yellow Jackets fell to Misericordia (9-4) in straight sets by scores of 15-25, 25-27, and 19-25, and to Wentworth (11-0) in three sets by set scores of 12-25, 17-25, and 19-25.

at Hobart

  • Senior All-Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League outside hitter Michael Beard (Hilliard/Darby) and freshman outside hitter Owen Huynh (Loveland) each had 10 kills and tallied eight digs and seven digs, respectively
  • Sophomore libero Aiden Kim (Bothell, Wash./North Creek) also recorded eight digs making him and Beard the team leaders versus the Statesmen
  • Junior right-side hitter Carson Junker (Massillon/Jackson) assisted 31 times and added six digs
  • Freshman outside hitter Daniel Latham (Westerville/Westerville Central) finished with seven kills, five digs, and three blocks
  • Huynh also led the team in blocks with three block assists

vs. No. 5 Misericordia

  • Junker had a team-high and career-high seven digs and added 27 more assists
  • Sophomore Academic All-MCVL middle hitter Josh Steinitz (Towson, Md./Friends School of Baltimore) and freshman right-side hitter Jacob Esteves (Wickliffe/St. Edward) defended the net with two total blocks each
  • Beard led the team in kills once again with eight total and also had four digs
  • Esteves, Huynh, and junior All-MCVL right-side hitter Michael Devlin (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) each added five kills for the Brown and Gold
  • Kim grabbed six more digs for the defense

 vs. No. 1 Wentworth

  • Beard recorded his 27th kill on the weekend after recording a team-high nine kills and five digs
  • Junker finished with 23 more assists giving him 81 on the weekend
  • Junior middle hitter Reed Fisher (Freedom, Pa./Ambridge Area) tallied four kills and teamed up with Latham and Esteves for the only two blocks of the game for the Yellow Jackets
  • Latham added six kills

The Yellow Jackets return to the court on Thursday, February 15 as they host the first game of the 2024 Yellow Jacket Invitational against non-conference opponent North Central (Ill.) College at 8 p.m. in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
