No. 20 Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Home Tri-Match

BEREA, Ohio – The No. 20 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University men's volleyball team swept a pair of non-conference matches with No. 17 nationally ranked Benedictine (Ill.) University and Geneva (Pa.) College in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (5-1) defeated Geneva College (8-5) in straight sets by scores of 25-23, 25-19 and 25-21. The Yellow Jackets took down Benedictine (4-2) in four sets by scores of 22-25, 25-20, 25-23 and 25-14. 

vs. Geneva

  • The offense was led by junior Academic All-Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League outside hitter Marquis Kelly (Surprise, Ariz./Willow Canyon) with a career-best tying 11 kills and senior outside hitter Nick Irelan (London/Olentangy Liberty) with nine kills
  • Junior Academic All-Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League setter Carson Junker (Massillon/Jackson) set up the offense with a career-high 36 assists
  • Sophomore libero Aiden Kim (Bothell, Wash./North Creek), who is this week's MCVL Defensive Player of the Week, anchored the defense with a match-best 19 digs.
  • Kelly and Irelan added 12 and 11 digs, respectively

vs. Benedictine

  • The offense was led by senior All-MVCL outside hitter Michael Beard (Hilliard/Darby) and junior right side hitter All-MCVL right side hitter Michael Devlin (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) as the duo each recorded a match-high tying 13 kills
  • Sophomore Academic All-MCVL middle hitter Josh Steinitz (Towson, Md./Friends School of Baltimore) and freshman outside hitter Owen Huynh (Loveland) each tallied 10 kills
  • Senior All-MCVL setter Brandon Long (Hinckley/Metea Valley {Ill.}) set up the offense with a match-best 38 assists
  • Beard anchored the defense with nine digs while Kim added seven. 

BW is back in action on Friday, February 9 when it travels to Geneva, New York for a non-conference match against Hobart College in its first match of the Statemen Volleyball Classic in Bristol Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
