Men's Soccer Team Beats SUNY-Geneseo, 2-1 in O.T.

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team defeated SUNY-Geneseo, 2-1 in overtime, in its season-opening match today (Saturday, August 30, 2008) at the Annual Herb Lauffer Tournament at Penn State Behrend College in Erie, Pennsylvania.  B-W will play Utica (N.Y.) in the championship game tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.

SUNY-Geneseo opened the scoring at the 24-minute mark when Joey Mort scored via a penalty kick to give them a 1-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets came back to tie the game at 1-1 at the 85:54 mark when freshman forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina) scored his first collegiate goal via an assist from junior midfielder Jim Synk (Strongsville).

BW then scored the game-winning 'golden goal' at the 99:04 mark when junior midfielder Charlie Thompson (Huron) scored via an assist from senior Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference midfielder Michael Grater (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls).

In goal, BW sophomore goalkeeper Zach Ryman (Casstown/ Troy) was outstanding as he faced four SUNY-Geneseo shots, made three saves and had a save percentage of .750.

Following its game tomorrow, the Yellow Jackets then play on Wednesday, September 3 against Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan in the second game of a women's and men's doubleheader at 5:00 and 7:00 p.m.
