Men's Soccer Team Falls to Wilmington, 2-1, in Season Finale

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team lost to Ohio Athletic Conference rival Wilmington College, 2-1, tonight (Friday, October 31, 2008) on Halloween Night on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea. This was B-W's final game of the season.

With its loss, the Yellow Jackets end the 2008 campaign with a record of 12-6-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the OAC.  With its win, Wilmington improves to 11-7-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the OAC.

In the first half, Wilmington opened the scoring at the at the 22:09 mark when Nick Kinder scored unassisted off a rebound.  The score would remain 1-0 in favor of Wilmington until halftime.

The Quakers extended their lead to 2-0 at the 52:31 mark when Robbert Kroeze scored off a pass from Chris Shomo.  But, B-W would not go down without a fight as junior midfielder Charlie Thompson (Huron) scored off an assist from his brother, freshman midfielder Andy Thompson (Huron) with 7:12 remaining in the match.  B-W would continue to apply pressure to the Wilmington defense over the final seven plus minutes, but could not come up with the equalizing goal.

In goal for B-W, junior Russ Mika (Medina/Senior) played all 90 minutes and made three saves, while surrendering two goals.  Mika ends the season with a 7-3-1 record.

B-W won the battle of shots, 13-9, and corner kicks, 2-0.

Freshman forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina/Senior) led the Yellow Jackets in scoring in the 2008 season with nine goals and one assist for 19 points.  Sophomore forward Tyler Leister (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) had six goals and five assists and senior midfielder Cory Kovach (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) had five goals.  Junior midfielder Andy Synk (Strongsville) led the team in assists with nine.

In goal, Mika played 1072 minutes and 53 seconds, gave up 16 goals and made 47 saves with two shutouts.  Sophomore Zach Ryman (Casstown/Troy) also saw significant time in goal as he played 666:24 minutes, recorded 31 saves , had a season record of 5-2 and had one shutout.
