BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team stayed unbeaten and moved to 5-0 overall as it defeated Grove City College of Pennsylvania, 4-0, today (Saturday, September 13, 2008) on Alumni Day on the newly installed FieldTurf on Tressel Field pitch at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea. The match was the nightcap of a women's and men's doubleheader.
With its win, B-W is now 5-0 overall this season and next plays on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Annual Ohio Athletic Conference - Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Shootout that will be held at Ohio Northern University in Ada. With its loss, GCC is now 0-5-1 overall.
BW jumped out to an early 1-0 lead at the 6:04 mark of the first half when freshman forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina/Senior) scored his fourth goal of the season off a pass from sophomore forward Tyler Leister (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls). The Yellow Jackets increased their advantage to 2-0 when Leister finished a cross from senior midfielder Andy Synk (Strongsville) in the 17th minute.
In the second half, the Yellow Jackets added a third goal at the 58:00 mark when senior midfielder Cory Kovach (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) scored via an assist from Synk. Then, sophomore midfielder Andy Weidner (Rocky River) scored off an assist from freshman defender Andrew Thompson (Huron) at the 65:53 mark to close out the B-W scoring.
In goal, sophomore Zach Ryman (Casstown/Troy) and senior Alex Stavros (Fairlawn/Copley) combined for the shutout. Ryman made four saves, while Stavros stopped one Grove City shot in the final 17 minutes of the game.
B-W won the battle of shots, 17-8 and corners, 4-2.
At the OAC-MIAA Shootout, B-W plays Calvin (Mich.) College on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and then plays Albion (Mich.) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
