Men's Soccer Team Stays Unbeaten with a 2-1 Win Against Allegheny (Pa.) in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- The seventh-ranked (www.nscaa.com Division III national poll) Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team stayed unbeaten and moved to 8-0-0 overall with a 2-1 victory against Allegheny College of Pennsylvania tonight (Wednesday, September 24, 2008) on the newly installed FieldTurf pitch of Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea.

The No.7 ranking for the Yellow Jackets is their best in school history. With a win this Saturday (Sept. 27) against Westminster College of Pennsylvania, B-W would have its best-ever start to a season and eclipse its 8-0-1 start in 2004-2005. With its loss, Allegheny fell to 2-6-0 overall.

B-W jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 23:34 mark of the first half when sophomore forward Tyler Leister (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) scored his fourth goal of the season from a through ball pass from senior midfielder Andy Synk (Strongsville).  Synk's assist was his team-leading seventh of season.  The Yellow Jackets maintained their 1-0 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Allegheny scored an early equalizer only 53 seconds into the second stanza off a header from D.J. Egan.  The score remained tied until the 80:35 mark when junior midfielder Charlie Thompson (Huron) scored the game-winner off a shot that was deflected by an Allegheny player.

In goal for B-W, junior Russ Mika (Medina/ Senior) faced nine Gator shots and made four saves, improving his record to 4-0 on the season.

B-W won the battle of shots, 15-9 and corners, 5-1.

After eight matches in 2008, Andy Synk leads the team in scoring with 11 points on two goals and seven assists.  Freshman forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina/Senior) leads the team in goals with five.

Following its game this Saturday in the second game of a women's (4:30 p.m. start) and men's doubleheader against Westminster, B-W will then play St. Vincent College of Pennsylvania on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 4:30 p.m. in the first game of a men's and women's (7:00 p.m. start) doubleheader. B-W begins its 2008 Ohio Athletic Conference schedule on Saturday, October 4 against Mount Union College in Berea at 7:00 p.m.
