Men's Soccer Team Loses to Heidelberg, 1-0, in Tiffin

BEREA, OHIO -- The seventh-ranked (www.nscaa.com Division III national poll) Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team lost to Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg College, 1-0, tonight (Wednesday, October 8, 2008) in Tiffin.

The loss is the Yellow Jackets' first of the season and they are now 11-1-0 overall and 1-1 in the OAC.  The loss ended both B-W's best start (11-0-0) in school history and its longest winning streak (11 games). With its win, Heidelberg improved to 4-6-2 overall and 1-1-0 in the OAC.

Heidelberg gained the lead at the 5:13 mark of the first half when Mike Harling headed a Brad Howell corner kick into the goal for the game's only score.  Senior midfielders Mike Grater (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls) and Cory Kovach (Chagrin Falls/ Kenston), penetrated the Heidelberg defense and managed five shots and four shots, respectively.

In goal for B-W, sophomore Zachary Ryman (Casstown/ Troy) played all 90 minutes and faced 17 Student Prince shots and made four saves.  He is 4-1 for the season.

Heidelberg won the battle of shots, 17-12, but B-W edged the Student Princes in corner kicks, 12-8.

After 12 matches in 2008, the Yellow Jackets are led in scoring freshman forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina/ Senior) who has seven goals and a team-high 15 points.  Overall, four players have recorded double-digit points, including, sophomore forward Tyler Leister (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls) and senior midfielder Andy Synk (Strongsville) who have 12 each, and Kovach with 10.

B-W returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 11 when it hosts Ohio Athletic Conference rival Otterbein College on the pitch of Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
