BEREA, OHIO -- The 20th-ranked (www.nscaa.com Division III national poll) Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team lost to Ohio Athletic Conference rival Muskingum College, 3-2, today (Saturday, October 11, 2008) in the first game of a men's and women's soccer doubleheader in New Concord.
The Yellow Jackets' fall to 11-4-0 overall and 1-4 in the OAC. Muskingum falls to 4-9-1 overall and 1-3-1 in conference play.
After a scoreless first half, Muskingum opened the scoring at the 48:17 mark when Paul Lafyatis scored unassisted. The Muskies then increased their lead to 2-0 at the 60:44 mark as Drew Untied finished off a ball from Lafyatis. Undaunted, B-W cut the Muskie lead in half when junior midfielder Charlie Thompson (Huron) scored his third goal of the season via an assist from sophomore forward Tyler Leister (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) at the 73:07. But, the Muskies extended the lead to 3-1 in the 77th minute when Lafyatis scored his second goal of the game unassisted. B-W would add a second goal with 3:18 remaining as freshman forward Carlin Vandendreissche (Medina/Senior) scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season off another Leister assist, giving him four on the year, making the score 3-2. However, Muskingum held on to earn the victory.
In goal for B-W, sophomore Zach Ryman (Casstown/Troy) played all 90 minutes and faced six Muskie shots and made three saves and fell to 5-2-0 for the season.
B-W won the battle of shots, 15-10, and corner kicks, 5-3.
After 15 matches in 2008, the Yellow Jackets are led in scoring Vandendriessche with 17 points on eight goals and one assist. Leister is second with five goals and four assists for 14 points.
B-W returns to action on Wednesday, October 22 when it plays Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital University at 4:00 p.m. at Bernlohr Stadium in Bexley.
