BW Loses First Place Battle to Otterbein, 2-0

BEREA, Ohio- - The Baldwin Wallace University women's soccer team lost its first Ohio Athletic Conference match this season when it lost to Otterbein University, 2-0, on Saturday night on Tressel Field inside the George Finnie Stadium. The Yellow Jackets and Cardinals entered the match tied for first place in the OAC.

In the first half, Otterbein (10-2-4, 6-0-1 OAC) tallied the first goal of the match at the 26:32 mark when senior midfielder Melinda Stemen scored unassisted for her fourth goal this season for a 1-0 lead. The score remained 1-0 at halftime.  BW (9-7-2, 5-1-1 OAC) attempted five shots near the net in the first stanza. 

In the second half, the Cardinals added to their lead when junior midfielder Jillian Strimbu scored her 12th goal this season to seal the win, and sophomore forward Alvi Shivley was credited on the assist.

Despite its loss, BW outshot Otterbein, 10-9, including six by junior midfielder Alex Elliott (Blacklick/ IMG Academy). The teams each had four corner kicks. In goal for BW, junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC netminder Emily Tallmadge (Fairview, Pa./ Fairview) saved four shots.

The Yellow Jackets, who have an 8-2-1 mark in their last 11 matches, end the OAC regular season schedule as they travel to Ada, Ohio to play Ohio Northern University on Wednesday, October 29 at 7 p.m. and then to Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, November 1 to play Capital University at 11 a.m.

The 2014 OAC Tournament begins on Tuesday, Nov. 4. Games are Tuesday, Thursday, Nov. 6 and the championship match is Saturday, Nov. 8.
