Capital Beats BW, 4-1, in OAC Championship Match in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The third-seeded Capital University women's soccer team defeated fourth-seeded Baldwin Wallace University, 4-1, in the 2014 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Match at Bernlohr Stadium.  With its win, Capital, 16-5-1 overall, advances to next week's NCAA Division III National Tournament.

With its loss, BW, 11-9-3 overall, lost for the second straight weekend to Capital and for the fourth straight time in Columbus. Capital beat BW, 2-1 in overtime, on Nov. 1. The four goals that BW allowed marked just the second time this season. Despite its loss, BW outscored its opponents, 39-28, in 2014.

In the first half, Capital gained a 1-0 lead at 2:03 when sophomore midfielder Claire Quinn send a long pass to freshman forward Shelby Johnson who beat a BW defender to the ball and then beat the goalie with a shot in the lower left corner. The Crusader lead grew to 2-0 at 3:34 when sophomore forward Becca Cartmill fed junior defender Morgan Austin who scored from 20 yards out.

The Capital advantage was 3-0 at 26:13 when freshman midfielder Amanda Kachaylo crossed the ball to freshman defender Mary Bushee who one-touched it into the goal. Capital also led 3-0 at halftime despite BW outshooting the Crusaders, 10-6.  Just two of BW's 10 attempts were on goal.

In the second half, Johnson scored her second goal of the match and gave Capital a 4-0 bulge at 67:47 when she took a pass from junior attacker Emily Kruase right in front of the goal and one-touched it into the lower right corner of the net.

BW closed the deficit to 4-1 fourteen seconds later at 68:54 when junior midfielder Alex Elliott (Blacklick/ IMG Academy) scored her team-leading ninth goal this season and junior forward Cheryl Bell (Piqua) earned her second assist.

The Yellow Jackets outshot the Crusaders, 17-12, but Capital held a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal.  The Crusaders also had a 6-2 lead in corner kicks.

In goal for BW, junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC goalie Emily Tallmadge (Fairview, Pa./ Fairview) faced 12 total shots, including 10 shots on goal and made six saves as her record dropped to 11-9-3 overall.
