BW Beats Ohio Wesleyan, 2-0, in Home Opener

BEREA, Ohio --  The Baldwin Wallace University women's soccer team earned its first win of the season with a 2-0 victory against traditional rival Ohio Wesleyan University in its home-opener on the Tressel Field pitch at The George Finnie Stadium on Tuesday evening. 

In the first half, neither team was able to find the back of the net. It was a tough defensive effort by both BW (1-2)  and OWU (0-2) that resulted in a scoreless deadlock at the intermission.  The Yellow Jackets attempted five shots to OWU's two in the first stanza. 

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets scored the first goal of the match at the 53:30 mark when freshman midfielder Anna Poptic (Dublin/Jerome) scored her first career goal on a header to put BW up 1-0.  Senior forward Nicole Boyd  (Warren/ Howland) was credited an assist.

The Yellow Jackets put the game away at the 89:11 mark when  freshman midfielder Lauren Haynam (Minerva) scored her first career goal to seal the victory with a 2-0 advantage. 

BW outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 15-6, in the match.  Junior goalkeeper Emily Tallmadge (Fairview, Pa.) had three saves and earned her first shutout this fall and the 13th of her three-year career as a starter.

The BW women are back in action when they travel to Columbus, Ohio this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 5-6 to play in the Capital University Classic.  The Yellow Jackets face Allegheny (Pa.) College on Friday at 6 p.m. and face Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday at 4 p.m.
