Women’s Basketball Handles Cross-town Rival John Carroll

BEREA, Ohio -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team closed out the first half of the Ohio Athletic Conference schedule as it posted a 75-59 victory against cross-town rival John Carroll University in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center. 

BW (13-3, 6-3 OAC), who is in the midst of a four-game homestand, had three players score in double figures led by senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC point guard Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg) as she scored 18 points.  Junior Academic All-OAC guard Katie Smith (Fairview Park/Fairview) tallied an OAC season-high 11 points. Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC forward Sydney Clark (Parma/Lake Ridge Academy) chipped in 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Senior All-OAC forward Clara Lemmon (Canton/Louisville) grabbed a game-high tying nine rebounds and added seven points.  The Yellow Jackets have won three straight and four of the last five contests against their cross-town rival.

John Carroll (4-12, 2-7 OAC) had two players score in double digits led by junior guard Shmoo Pryor as she scored a game-high 19 points.  Senior All-OAC forward Katlyn Spahar contributed 18 points and grabbed a game-high tying nine rebounds.

BW opened the game on a 5-0 run as Colombo knocked down a triple at the 7:46 mark.  The Blue Streaks closed out the first quarter on 14-6 run to lead 14-11 a on a when sophomore forward Chelbi Graham scored on a layup with 44 seconds remaining. 

John Carroll continued its scoring streak as it opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run to push its lead to 21-11 on a layup by Graham at the 8:29 mark.  The Yellow Jackets answered back with an 11-2 run to cut the lead down to 23-22 on a triple from Smith at 5:02.   BW closed out the quarter and the half on a 10-6 run capped off by a three-pointer by Colombo with five seconds remaining as the Yellow Jackets held the 32-29 lead at the intermission. 

BW opened the second half on an 8-4 run to push its lead to 40-33 on a putback by Lemmon at the 7:245 mark.  The Blue Streaks fought back with a 9-7 run to cut the lead down to 47-42 on a layup by Spahar at 3:42. The Yellow Jackets closed the third quarter on a 7-2 run to lead 54-44 when Clark knocked down a pair from the charity stripe with 55 seconds left. 

BW kept the scoring attack rolling to open the fourth quarter as it went on an 10-1 run and extended its lead to 65-45 when sophomore forward Rachel Womeldorf (Lewis Center/Olentangy) converted the three-point play at the 6:43 mark.   John Carroll responded with a 7-3 run to cut the lead down to 68-52 when Spahar scored on a layup but missed the foul shot at 4:48.   Both teams scored seven points the remainder of the game.

BW is back in action on Saturday, January 21 when it hosts Muskingum University in the first game of a women's and men's OAC doubleheader in the Ursprung Gym at 2 p.m.   Fans can follow all of the action live at http://www.bwyellowjackets.com/x/i3vyl
