Women’s Basketball Holds Off Case Western Reserve in Overtime

CLEVELAND -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team won a thrilling overtime game against cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University by a final score of 91-86 in the Horsburgh Gymnasium inside the Veale Center.

BW (2-0) had two players score in double figures led by senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC forward Sydney Clark (Parma/Lake Ridge Academy) as she scored a team-high and a season-high 21 points, which was one point shy of her career-high. Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC point guard Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg) tallied a season-high 15 points and dished out five assists.  In addition, junior forward Megan Schubert (Defiance/Ayersville) and freshman guard Kasey Hughes (Springboro) contributed nine points apiece.

The Spartans (2-2) had three players score in double figures led by Kara Hageman as she scored a game-high 25 points. Hillary Hellmann recorded 21 points, including 19 in the second half.  Kendall McConico added 10 points.

The game was tied on three occasions in the first quarter with the last coming at 6-6 on a layup by BW sophomore forward Rachel Womeldorf (Lewis Center/Olentangy) at the 5:37 mark.   The Yellow Jackets went on a 6-2 run to take a 14-8 lead on a put back by senior All-OAC forward Clara Lemmon (Canton/Louisville) at 3:13. Case Western Reserve closed the opening period on a 12-3 run to tie the game at 17-17 after one quarter of play. 

The Spartans opened the second quarter on a 5-2 run to take a 22-19 lead when Hageman converted the traditional three-point play at the 8:28 mark.  BW responded with a 7-2 run to regain the lead at 26-24 when sophomore guard Hannah Fecht (Hilliard/Davidson), who scored eight points and grabbed a game-high and career-high 11 rebounds, converted the three-point play at 6:11. 

Case Western Reserve went on a 6-0 run to take a 30-26 lead before the Yellow Jackets went on an 8-0 run to take a 34-30 lead on jumper by sophomore guard MacKenzi Matthews (North Royalton) at the 3:18 mark.  BW outscored the Spartans, 10-7, the remainder of the opening half to lead 44-37 at the intermission. 

Each team scored six points to open the third quarter scoring with the last points coming on a three-pointer by Clark at the 7:02 mark to give BW the 50-43 advantage.   Case Western Reserve answered back with an 8-2 run to cut the lead down to 52-51 when Hellmann scored the three-point play at 3:02.   The Spartans outscored the Yellow Jackets, 11-8, to close out third stanza and lead 61-59 after three quarters of action. 

BW opened the fourth period on an 8-4 run to take a 67-65 lead on jumper by Clark at the 6:22 mark.  The Yellow Jackets used another 8-4 run to push their lead to seven points at 75-69 on a pair of free throws by Colombo at 3:52. Case Western Reserve responded with a 10-4 run to tie the game at 79-79 on a jumper by Hellman with 33 seconds left.  BW's Clark had a chance to win the game in regulation but her jumper hit off the front of the rim as time expired. 

The Yellow Jackets outscored the Spartans, 10-7, in the extra session, including scoring the final five points from the foul line.  Colombo was 3-of-4 and Clark went 2-for-2 in that stretch. 

BW is back in action on Wednesday, November 30 when it travels Alfred, New York for a non-conference game against Alfred University in the McLane Center at 5 p.m.   The Yellow Jackets open up OAC play on Saturday, December 3 when they travel to Marietta to take on the Marietta College Pioneers in the Ban Johnson Arena at 3 p.m.
