BEREA, Ohio -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team opened the 2016-2017 season with an impressive, 70-41 victory against traditional rival Oberlin College in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (1-0) won its second straight season opener and avenged a 2015-2016 season-opening loss at Oberlin (0-1).   The Yellow Jackets have won seven of their last nine season openers and improved to 17-6 all-time versus the Yeowomen. A big key in the game for BW was having its bench outscore Oberlin's backups, 43-11.

BW had two players score in double figures led by sophomore guard Hannah Fecht (Hilliard/Davidson) as she scored a career-high 17 points.  Sophomore forward Rachel Womeldorf (Lewis Center/Olentangy) contributed a career-best 15 points.

Oberlin was led by Olivia Canning as she posted a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

In the first quarter, the Yeowomen jumped out to a 5-2 lead when Olivia Canning hit a layup at the 7:29 mark.  The Yellow Jackets responded with an 8-2 run to take a 10-7 lead on a pair of free throws by Womeldorf at 2:52. Each team hit a bucket down the stretch.

BW opened the second stanza on an 11-4 to push its lead to 23-13 on a layup by Womeldorf at the 5:25 mark.  The Yellow Jackets extended the lead to a first-half high of 13 points at 30-17 on pair of free throws by freshman guard Kasey Hughes (Springboro) at 2:38. Oberlin outscored BW by a 3-2 count the remainder of the period but trailed 32-20 at the intermission.

The Yellow Jackets turned in an impressive defensive stand in the third and fourth quarters as BW held the Yeowomen to just 21 points, including only six in the fourth stanza.  The Yellow Jackets pushed their lead to as many as 32 points when junior forward Megan Schubert (Defiance/Ayersville) scored on a layup with 32 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

BW is back in action on Tuesday, November 22 when it travels to nearby Cleveland for a non-conference game against cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University in in the Horsburgh Gymnasium inside the Veale Center at 7 p.m.
