Women’s Basketball Wins Third Straight Versus Capital

BEREA, Ohio –The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team won its third straight game against Capital University as it posted a 63-43 Ohio Athletic Conference victory in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (19-4, 12-4 OAC) had two players score in double figures led by senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC point guard Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg) as she scored a game-high 17 points.  Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC forward Sydney Clark (Parma/Lake Ridge Academy) contributed 14 points.

Capital (9-14, 5-11 OAC) had two players score in double digits led by sophomore forward Erin Risner as she scored 14 points. Junior forward Chelsea Pla added 10 points.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early 5-0 lead when junior Academic All-OAC guard Katie Smith (Fairview Park/Fairview) buried a three-pointer as the shot clock expired at the 8:25 mark of the opening quarter.  The Crusaders fought back with a 4-0 run to cut the lead down to one point at 5-4 on a putback by Pla at 6:22. BW closed out the quarter on a 12-2 run to push its lead to 17-6 as Clark hit a jumper as time expired.

Capital opened the second period on an 8-5 run to cut the lead down to 22-14 when freshman guard Sam Sech scored on a layup at the 7:16 mark.  The Crusaders used a 7-5 run to cut the lead down to 27-21 on a layup by Pla at 2:03.   The Yellow Jackets closed the half on a 6-1 run to push its lead to 33-22 at the intermission.  BW got its final basket on a jumper by Colombo with 33 seconds remaining.  Capital was fouled with 0.3 ticks on the clock but junior guard Annika Wachtman only converted one from the charity stripe.

The Crusaders opened the second half on a 4-1 run to cut the lead down to 34-26 on a jumper by Risner at the 8:03 mark.  The Yellow Jackets responded with a 7-2 run to extend their lead to 41-28 on a layup by sophomore forward Rachel Womeldorf (Lewis Center/Olentangy) at 3:45. BW outscored Capital by a count of 8-6 the remainder of the quarter to lead 49-34 after three quarters of action.

The Yellow Jackets opened the final quarter on a 7-0 run to push its lead to 22 points at 56-34 when sophomore guard MacKenzi Matthews (North Royalton) hit a pair from the foul line at the 8:40 mark.  The Crusaders fought back with a 9-5 run to cut the lead down to 61-43 on a jumper by Wachtman at 4:19. Both teams each scored one bucket the remainder of the game.

BW closes out the road portion of its regular season schedule on Wednesday, February 15 when it travels to Alliance for an OAC game against the University of Mount Union in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex at 7:30 p.m.
