ALFRED, N.Y. -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team cruised to a 94-28 non-conference victory against Alfred (N.Y.) University in Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
BW had four players score in double figures, led by sophomore forward Rachel Womeldorf (Lewis Center/ Olentangy) as she scored a career-high 16 points. Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Clara Lemmon (Canton/ Louisville) had a season-high 15 points while junior Academic All-OAC guard Katie Smith (Fairview Park/ Fairview) contributed a season-best 11 points. Freshman guard Riley Schill (Sheffield Lake/ Elyria Catholic) chipped in a career-high 10 points.
Alfred (2-4) was led by Amanda Off with 11 of the team's 30 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets opened the first quarter on an 18-0 run when freshman guard Kara Marshall (Copley/ Akron Archbishop Hoban), who grabbed a career-high seven rebounds, knocked down a three-pointer at the 3:56 mark. BW held the Saxons just to two points in the opening period and closed out the first sessuin on a 10-2 run to lead 28-2.
In the second quarter, the Yellow Jacket defense allowed just seven Alfred points while the offense scored 21 more to lead 49-9 at the intermission. BW pushed its lead to as many as 40 points on a layup by Womeldorf with 52 seconds remaining in the second period. The 49 points in the first half is a season-high for the Yellow Jackets. The nine points allowed is a season-low.
In the third stanza, BW pushed its lead to as many as 56 points, at 73-17, when Schill scored on a layup with 59 seconds left. The Yellow Jackets allowed 13 Saxon points in the third period and led 75-22.
BW extended its lead to a game-high 68 points at 92-24 when freshman guard Kasey Hughes (Springboro) nailed a triple at the 3:57 mark. The Yellow Jacket defense allowed six Alfred points in the fourth quarter.
BW is back in action on Saturday, December 3 when it travels to Marietta, Ohio for its OAC- opener against Marietta College in the Ban Johnson Arena at 3 p.m. The next home game is on Monday, December 19 versus non-league rival Ohio Welseyan University in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center ar 6 p.m.
