Men’s Lacrosse Team Outlasts Alma (Mich.) in Non-Conference Action

BEREA, Ohio – Freshman midfielder Judson Huston (Deleware / Rutherford B. Hayes) scored a career-best and game-high four goals to lead the Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team to a 14-9 non-conference victory against Alma (Mich.) College on Tressel Field inside George Finnie Stadium this evening.

In addition to Huston, BW (6-1) was led by sophomore attack Alex Binner (East Amherst, N.Y. / Williamsville North) and freshman midfielder Chad Steinwachs (Buffalo, N.Y. / Williamsville North). Binner scored two goals and added two assists for four points and Steinwachs scored two goals and added one assist for three points.

Alma (5-3) was led by freshman midfielder Jake Ellens who scored three goals.

In the first quarter, the Scots opened the scoring when senior Marshall Argenta scored off an assist from senior midfielder Kyle Schnitzer at the 13:49 mark. The Yellow Jackets responded with two unassisted goals by Huston with the last coming at the 11:29 mark. BW increased their lead to 5-2 by going on a 3-1 run to end the first stanza with the last goal coming from Steinwachs at the 4:58 mark.  

In the second quarter, Alma scored two unanswered goals to cut the Yellow Jacket lead down to 5-4 at the 8:41 mark. BW closed out the half on a 3-1 run with goals from freshman attack Ethan Napieralski (Lancaster, NY.), Huston and junior midfielder Tanner Roberts (Murrysville, Pa. / Franklin Regional) to take an 8-5 lead going into halftime.

The Yellow Jackets opened up the second half with a goal from junior attack Andrew Spicher (Erie, Pa. / McDowell) to increase their lead to 9-5 with 13:39 remaining in the third period. BW added to their lead by going on a 2-1 run to end the quarter with goals from Binner and Steinwachs with the last coming at 3:02.

In the final quarter, each team scored three goals with the Yellow Jackets goals coming from Huston, All-OAC junior midfielder Shane Rakich (Dublin / Olentangy Liberty) and sophomore attack Derek Andrews (Alden, N.Y. / Iroquois). Andrews's goal came via an assist from freshman midfielder Thomas Moesch (Ithaca, N.Y.).

In goal for the Yellow Jackets, sophomore netminder Mike Dizonno (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) faced 15 total shots, allowed seven goals and made six saves to improve his season record to 6-1.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action when they travel to Latrobe, Pennsylvania on Wednesday, March 30 to square off against St. Vincent (Pa.) College in a non-conference game on Chuck Noll Field. The opening face-off is slated for 4 p.m.
