No. 24 Men’s Basketball Falls to Muskingum in Overtime Thriller

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The 24th-nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team dropped an Ohio Athletic Conference overtime thriller as it was defeated by Muskingum University by a final score of 98-95 on Performance Court inside the Anne C. Steele Center.

BW (5-2, 1-2 OAC) had four players score in double figures led by junior All-OAC guard Cam Kuhn (Vermilion) as he scored a game-high tying 31 points. Sophomore guard Jay Battle (Gahanna/Lincoln) tallied a season-best 17 points.  Junior All-OAC forward Jake Fetherolf (Norwalk) recorded his 15th career double-double as he scored 13 points and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds. Freshman guard Michael Quiring (Brunswick) chipped in with a career-high 13 points.

With his 31 points, Kuhn moved to 29th on the all-time BW scoring list with 1,092 points.  He now needs 19 points to pass Jerry Seuess (1952-55) for 25th place with 1,111.

Muskingum (6-1, 2-1 OAC) had four players score in double figures led by Jarell Marsh with a game-high tying 31 points.  Marcus Dempsey tallied 22 points and Jalen Paige added 14 points. Joshua Keyes recorded a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds.

In the first half, the Fighting Muskies jumped out to a 15-8 lead when Devon Peart split a pair of free throws at the 12:08 mar.   The Yellow Jackets responded with a 14-7 run to tie the game at 22-22 on a Battle layup at 7:28.   BW outscored the Muskingum 21-14 the remainder of the first half and led 43-36 at the intermission.  Kuhn scored 12 of the Yellow Jacket 21 points in the final minutes of the opening half.

The Fighting Muskies opened the second half on a 14-7 run to tie the game at 50-50 on a three-pointer by Paige at the 16:15 mark.   BW responded with an 13-2 run to take a 61-52 lead on a layup from freshman guard Michael Quiring (Brunswick) at 14:03.  Muskingum answered back with a 26-15 run to take a 78-76 lead on a layup by Keyes at the 4:46 mark.

The Yellow Jackets cut the lead down to one points at 84-83 when Battle knocked down a pair from the charity stripe with 1:36 remaining.  BW's Kuhn sent the game into overtime as he buried a three-pointer with just three seconds left in regulation. The Fighting Muskies had a look to win the game but the three-pointer went at the buzzer went off the rim.

In overtime, Muskingum took a four-point lead at 97-93 when Keyes split a pair of free throws with 12 seconds remaining.   The Yellow Jackets cut the lead down to 97-95 on a putback by Fetherolf with two seconds left.  The Fighting Muskies sealed the game as Dempsey split pair of free throws with 1.5 seconds remaining.
