Men’s Basketball Falls at Ohio Northern

ADA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team was defeated by Ohio Northern University, 86-77, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game inside the ONU Sports Center.

BW (7-7, 2-5 OAC) had four players score in double figures led by junior All-OAC guard Cam Kuhn (Vermillion) as he scored a game-high 22 points. All-OAC junior forward Jake Fetherolf (Norwalk) contributed 18 points to go along with a game-high nine rebounds.  Freshman forward Tyler Colombo (Strasburg/Tuscarawas Central Catholic) and sophomore guard Wes Gerhardt (Lakewood) each added 10 points.  The 10 points was a career-high tying night for Colombo and a career-high for Gerhardt.

With his 22 points, Kuhn remains 20th on the all-time BW scoring list with 1,196 points. He needs 187 points to pass Kevin Krakowiak (2010-2014) for 15th place with 1,383 points.

Ohio Northern University (7-7, 5-2 OAC) was led by junior guard Joey DiOrio  with 20 points and four other Polar Bears scoring in double figures.  Starters Nate Burger, Ryan Bruns and forward Konnor Baker  added 17, 12, and 10 points respectively.  Aron Thress went six of six shooting from the free-throw stripe for 14 points and contributed a team-high 8 rebounds. As a team the Polar Bears sunk 18 consecutive free throws before a late game miss to finish the game 19-20 (95%).

In the first half, the Polar Bears opened up with a 10-2 run at the 14:58 mark after a jumper from Burger dropped to build the lead to 21-10. Ohio Northern garnered their largest lead of the half, 29-16, after a jumper from Thress extended the Polar Bears lead to 13 at the 10:13 mark. BW came roaring back with a 23-8 run of their own to take their first lead of the game, 39-37, at the 2:43 mark after a three-pointer from Fetherolf.  A late 6-2 run from Ohio Northern capped off by a last second layup by senior guard Joey Hurless gave the Polar Bears the lead 43-41 heading into the intermission.

The Polar Bears opened up the second half with a 15-8 run fueled by Diorio's eight points to extend the Ohio Northern lead 58-49 at the 15:48 mark. The Yellow Jackets once again answered with a 17-8 run of their own led by Kuhn with seven points during that stretch to tie the game 66-66 at the 8:32 mark. Ohio Northern jumped up to a five point lead 79-74 after a layup by Thress at the 3:53 mark.  Kuhn would cut the lead to two 79-77 after an he made a tradition three-point play with 1:58 left in regulation.  Ohio Northern closed out the game with a 7-3 run in the final two minutes to take the OAC contest by a final score of 86-77.
