BEREA, Ohio – The No. 20-nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team lost to fourth-rankedr Marietta College, 84-64, in its 2016-2017 Ohio Athletic Conference opener in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center. The loss was BW's first after four straight victories.
BW (4-1, 0-1 OAC) was led by junior two-time All-OAC guard Cam Kuhn (Vermilion) with a team-high 17 points. With his 17 points he is 35th on the BW's all-time scoring list with 1,040 points and 17 shy of catching all-time greats Bob Harringer '69 and Joe Rinkes '91 who are tied for 33rd with 1,057 markers. In addition to Kuhn, freshman forward Alex Nahra (Mayfield) scored a career-high 11 points and All-OAC forward Jake Fetherolf (Norwalk) tallied seben points and a game-high 15 rebounds and four blocked shots.
Marietta (5-0, 1-0 OAC) had four players in double figures and was ked by junior guard Keith Richardson with a game-high-tying 17 points off the bench. Senior All-OAC forward A.J. Edwards added 14 points and had a team-high-tying eight rebounds, sophomore guard Anthony Wallace netted 11 points and junior guard Dillon Young scored 10.
In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early, 14-6 lead when Nahra buried a three pointer at the 14:13 mark. Sophomore guard Mel Shuler made the traditional three-point play for the Pioneers to tie the game up at 20-20 with 9:50 left in the half. BW outscored Marietta 15-9 to take a 35-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Early in the second half, BW built its largest advantage of the game at 44-35, but it was all Marietta after that point. The Pioneers capped a 17-9 run and took the lead for good at 46-44 when Young made a layup at the 12:27 mark. BW got as close as three points when freshman guard Michael Quiring (Brunswick) made two fouls shots with 10:17 remaining. Marietta went on another run and pushed its lead to a game-high of 21 points when Richardson made two foul shots at the 1:16 mark.
