Women Defeat Muskingum, 75-50, in New Concord to Remain Tied for First in OAC

NEW CONCORD, OHIO --  Senior All-OAC guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) scored 17 points as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated host Muskingum University, 75-50, today (Saturday, February 5, 2011) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the John Glenn Gymnasium.  The win kept BW in a first place tie in the OAC with the University of Mount Union, both at 11-3 in conference play.

With its win, BW is now 16-5 overall and ended a two-game losing streak.  In addition to Schroeder for the Yellow Jackets, junior forward Catherine Spisak (Sandusky/St. Mary Central Catholic) scored 12 points and had a team-high 13 rebounds and sophomore guard Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/Hoover) had 11 points. For Muskingum, now 10-11 overall and 8-6 in the OAC, junior forward Hannah Oakley led the way with 11 points.

With her 17 points today, Schroeder now has 1,299 career points and needs 11 more to surpass former Academic All-American Jen Swinehart (1995-99), who had 1,309 points during her career.


In the first half, BW got on the board first as freshman forward Jessica Lairson (Louisville) made a layup on the team's first possession. Muskingum took their first and only lead of the game at 5-4 at the 17:51 mark when Oakley converted a traditional three point play.
 

BW then went on a 5-0 run as Spisak hit a jumper and then sophomore guard Olivia French (Bucyrus/Colonel Crawford) made a three pointer to make the score 9-5 in favor of BW with 15:45 remaining in the half.


After a Muskingum basket at 14:53 by Oakley, the Yellow Jackets went on a 12-0 run, holding Muskingum scoreless for over the next eight minutes. The run was capped off by a Spisak jumper at the 7:58 mark making the score 21-7.  

The Fighting Muskies ended their drought when senior forward Yasmyn Inskeep split a pair of free throws following a BW intentional foul at 6:39. 

BW would extend its lead to as many as 17 points on three separate occasions with the last coming at the 1:59 mark as sophomore guard Megan Frisina (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) scored on a jumper, making the score 33-16. The Jackets took a 35-19 lead into the half.
 

In the second half, BW came out and extended their lead to 45-25 at the 16:54 mark when Schroederconnected on a three pointer. Muskingum would get as close as 14 points with 9:03 remaining at 51-37 when junior forward Rachel Buirley made two free throws. The Yellow Jackets however would not allow a Muskingum comeback and led by as many as 28 points when Lairson scored on a layup with 1:59 left.


The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, February 9 when they host OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center at 7:30 p.m.  In addition, fans can listen to all of the action on either campus radio station WBW, 88.3 FM, or via the WBW Internet web site at www.wBW.com
