Women's Basketball Team Defeats Transylvania (Ky.), 75-66, in Lexington

BEREA, OHIO -- Senior two-time All-OAC guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) scored a game-high 23 points, including 18 second-half 18 points, as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Transylvania (Ky.) University, 75-66, today (Sunday, December 18, 2010) in the second round of the Transylvania Classic in Lexington, Kentucky.  This marked the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

With the win, the Yellow Jackets improved to 8-2 overall and were keyed to the victory by shooting 30-of-37 from foul line for 81.1 percent, including 23-of-27 for 85.2% in the second half.  With its loss, Transylvania fell to 6-4 overall and were led by senior forward Holly Milburn with 22 points.

   
   

Schroeder scored her 23 points on 7-of-8 (.875) shooting from the field and 9-of-10 (.900) from the charity stripe.  In addition to Schroeder, freshman guard Jessica Lairson (Louisville) was the only other BW player to score in double figures as she tallied a career-high 10 points on shooting 4-of-5 (.800) from the field and a perfect 2-of-2 (.1000) from three point land. Junior forward Catherine Spisak (Sandusky/St. Mary's Central Catholic) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

Schroeder, who remains in eighth place on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring list with 1,041 career points, needs five points to catch former All-American and current NACDA (National Association of College Directors of Athletics) Media Relations Director Julie Work (1995-99) for seventh place and nine more points to tie former standout Holly Koepp (1999-2003) for sixth place with 1,150 career points.

In the first half,  the Pioneers opened the scoring when Milburn converted a pair of free throws at the 18:43 mark.  
BW took its first lead of the game, 3-2, when Lairson buried a three-pointer at 18:28.   Transylvania then took a 6-3 advantage on a pair of baskets by Milburn with the last coming at 17:11.   The Yellow Jackets tied the game at 6-6 when Lairson hit her second trey with 16:58 remaining in the period.

The Pioneers went on a 6-0 run to lead 12-6 on a jumper by Milburn at 13:41. BW snapped a four-minute scoreless streak on a layup at 13:10 by freshman forward Lexi Rohrbach (Tiffin/ Columbian).  The Yellow Jackets cut the lead back to three points, 12-9, when freshman guard Kristin Troyer (Dover/ Garaway) split a pair of free throws at the 12:10 mark.

BW cut into the lead, 16-12, when sophomore wing Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/Hoover) nailed a shot from beyond the arc with 10:25 left in the stanza.  The Jackets got a little closer when Schroeder scored on a put-back at 9:18.   BW tied the game at 16-16 when sophomore guard Megan Frisina (Corry, Pa.) hit a pair of free throws with 8:45 left.  The Yellow Jackets took their second lead of the game at 19-18 when Carpenter hit a long three-pointer at 7:29.  BW then tied the game at 20-20 when Rohrbach split a pair of free throw with 6:46 remaining.

The Pioneers once again used a 6-0 run to take a 26-20 advantage on a pair of free throws by senior guard Olivia Akridge at 4:48.   The Yellow Jackets then had a 5-0 run of their own to cut the lead to 26-25 as Schroeder split a pair of free throws at 2:25.   BW tied the game at 27-27 when Spisak on a jumper at 1:58. Transylvania outscored the Jackets 8-3 over the remainder of the first half to lead 35-30 at the intermission.

In the second half,  BW took control of the game as it came out of the break on a 12-0 run to take a lead of 42-35 that it would never relinquish.   The Pioneers could not get any closer than five points when Akridge scored on a layup to cut the lead down to 42-37 with 16:56 left in the game.  The Yellow Jackets increased their lead to a game-high 15 points as senior guard Ali Stack (Vermilion/ Firelands) connected on the traditional three-point play with 2:30 remaining.

BW is back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 22 when it hosts Ohio Athletic Conference rival Otterbein University in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea at 7:00 p.m. Fans can listen to all of the action on either campus radio station WBW, 88.3 FM, or via the WBW Internet web site at www.wBW.com. Following that game, the Yellow Jackets are idle until January 5, 2011.

In addition, two BW women's and men's basketball doubleheaders will be telecast on SportsTime Ohio this winter. The games are the January 29, 2011 twinbill versus Wilmington College and the Third Annual Take a Kid to the Game Day doubleheader versus Ohio Northern University on February 19, 2011.
