Women's Basketball Team Defeats Heidelberg, 67-43, For Fifth Straight Victory

BEREA, OHIO --  Sophomore guard Megan Frisina (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) scored a career-high 14 points as the first place Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg University, 67-43, tonight (Wednesday, January 26, 2011) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center. 

With its win, BW won its fifth straight game and improved  to 15-3 overall and 10-1 in the OAC.  The Yellow Jackets maintained a two-game lead in the OAC standings over second place Mount Union and Ohio Northern University. In addition to Frisina for BW, senior two-time All-OAC guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds while freshman forward Jessica Lairson (Louisville) added 11 points. Heidelberg is now 1-17 overall and 0-11 in the OAC.

With her 13 points tonight, Schroeder remained in fourth place on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring list with 1,264 career points and is 45 shy of tying former Academic All-American and BW Hall of Famer Jen Swinehart (1995-99) who had 1,309 points.

In the first half, BW opened the game when Lairson hit a jumper at the 19:17 mark.  The Yellow Jackets built their lead to five points, 6-1, on pair of free throws by sophomore wing Jess Carpenter (North Canton/Hoover).  Heidelberg responded when senior forward Kristen McConkey scored a layup and jumper to cut the deficit to 7-5. 

After Heidelberg senior forward Jenny Miller hit a pair of free throws,  BW went on a 17-0 run led by Schroeder with 10 points.  The Student Princes ended the Yellow Jacket run on a pair of McConkey free throws at 7:57 making the score 28-9.  


BW outscored Heidelberg 15-4 over the remainder of the half to lead 43-13 at the intermission. The Yellow Jackets held the Student Princes to just four field goals in the first stanza. 

In the second half, Heidelberg would come as close as 22 points following a pair of free throws by Casey Bishop with 34 seconds remaining in the game.  BW increased it lead to as many as 32 points on a three-pointer by Schroeder at the 17:34 mark.

The Yellow Jackets remain at home and are back in action on Saturday, January 29 when they host Wilmington College in the Ursprung Gym at 2:00 p.m. in the first game of a women's and men's doubleheader. The BW and Wilmington men play at 4:00 p.m.  In addition, fans can listen to all of the action on either campus radio station WBW, 88.3 FM, or via the WBW Internet web site at www.wBW.com
