Yellow Jackets Defeat Cross-Town Rival CWRU, 69-62, in University Circle

BEREA, OHIO --  Sophomore guard Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/ Hoover) scored a team-high 13 points as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated host and Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University, 69-62, tonight (Tuesday, November 23, 2010) in Horsburgh Gymnasium in University Circle. The Yellow Jackets led from start-to-finish with just one tie.

In addition to Carpenter for BW, now 3-1 overall, senior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) had 12 points and sophomore guard Olivia French (Bucyrus/ Colonel Crawford) had 10 points.  Junior forward Catherine Spisak (Sandusky/ St. Mary's Central Catholic) and freshman Lexi Rohrbach (Tiffin/ Columbian) led the way on the boards as each had 11 rebounds and led a 53-36 reboundiong advantage. Another key to the victory was BW making 26-of-29 foul shots for 89.7 percent.

For CWRU, now 3-1 overall, sophomore guard Evy Iacono had a game-high 20 points.  She was joined in double figures by sophomore guard Erica Iafelice with 13 points and junior forward Erin Hollinger and senior forward Caitlin Henry each had 11 markers.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 8-0 lead at the 15:15 mark when French.  BW shut out the Spartans for the first 5:20 of the contest until CWRU's sophomore guard Evy Iacono made a three-pointer to cut the lead to 8-3 with 14:40 left.  The Spartans continued their run and outscored BW 9-4 to tie the score at 12-12 with 11:25 left when Iacono canned a pair of foul shots.

BW regained the lead at 14-12 when junior forward Nancy Coulter (Washington Court House/ Miami Trace) made a jump shot with 10:56 left in the half. The run reached eight straight points as the Yellow Jackets regained their eight-point lead at 20-12 with 6:54 left before the intermission when Carpenter scored on a layup off of a fastbreak.  Following a made foul shot by CWRU's junior forward Erin Hollinger, BW freshman Kristen Troyer (Dover/ Garaway) made two foul shots at the 5:45 mark to make the score 22-13.

A six-point CWRU run, capped by pair of foul shots by Iacono at the 4:31 mark cut BW's lead to three points at 22-19. Then BW outscored CWRU 13-2 to build its largest lead of the half at 35-21 with 10 seconds left when Spisak made two foul shots.  A basket by CWRU at the buzzer left the score 35-23 at halftime.

In the second half, BW came out strong and scored the first five points to build its largest lead at 17 points at 40-23 with 18:40 remaining when Carpenter canned a three-pointer. Undaunted, the Spartans outscored the Yellow Jackets 11-4 to close to 10 points at 44-34 with 14:29 left when senior forward Caitlin Henry made a layup. After Iacono made a jumper to cut BW's lead the single digits at 47-39, the Yellow Jackets went on a 9-4 run to regain a 13-point lead at 56-43 with 8:05 left when freshman Jessica Lairson (Louisville) made her second three-pointer of the game.

Following four straight points by CWRU sophomore center Emily Mueller that cut BW's lead back to nine points at 56-47, BW outscored the Spartans 6-1 to push the lead back to 14 points at 62-48 with 3:02 left when Lairson made two foul shots. The closest CWRU would get after that point was six points with 42 seconds left in the contest.

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Wednesday, December 1 when they open 2010-2011 Ohio Athletic Conference play in Tiffin, Ohio against rival Heidelberg University in the Seiberling Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.  The first home game of the season is on Saturday, Dec. 4 when BW hosts non-league foe Kenyon College in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center at 2:00 p.m.
