Schroeder Scores 25 Points as the Women Basketball Team Defeats Heidelberg, 67-50, in Tiffin

BEREA, OHIO - Senior guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) scored a season-high 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg University, 67-50, tonight (Wednesday, December 1, 2010) in the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin. This was the OAC opener for each team.

With her 25 points, Schroeder moved into ninth place on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring list with 1,054 points as she surpassed Stephanie Fleming (1986-90) who scored 1,047 career points.

In addition to Schroeder for BW, now 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the OAC, sophomore guard Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/ Hoover), junior forward Catherine Spisak (Sandusky/ St. Mary's Central Catholic) and freshman forward Lexi Rohrbach (Tiffin/ Columbian) each scored 10 points. Spisak also led BW with nine rebounds. For Heidelberg, now 0-5 overall and 0-1 in the OAC, senior forward Jenny Miller led the way with 16 points and a game-high 18 rebounds

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a short-lived 2-0 lead at the 18:19 mark when Schroeder made a layup.  The Student Princes then went on an 11-0 run to take an 11-2 lead with 13:46 left when freshman guard Kathleen Phillips made a three-pointer. BW ended the run when Rohrbach made two foul shots at 13:24 to make the score 11-4.

Heidelberg then built its lead to 10 points, at 14-4 when Phillips made one of two foul shots at the 12:39 mark.  The Yellow Jackets then closed to within six points at 14-8 when Schroeder made a layup at the 12:03 mark. Then, after Heidelberg built an 18-10 advantage, BW went on an 8-0 run to tie the score at 18-18 with 8:28 left when Schroeder made a jump shot in the lane.

The Student Princes then regained the lead at 20-18 at 7:42 when sophomore guard Jordan Ickes made a layup off of a fastbreak. After Heidelberg's lead grew to 22-18, BW went on n 8-0 run to take the lead at 26-22 lead at the 1:04 mark when freshman guard Jessica Lairson (Louisville) made a layup off of a fastbreak. BW's advantage grew to 29-22 when Carpenter made one of two foul shots and Rohrbach grabbed the missed second sot and scored with 18 seconds left. Ickes closed the gap to 29-24 at the intermission when she made a jumper with three seconds left before the intermission.

In the second half, Heidelberg went on a 7-3 run to get within one point at 32-31 with 17:35 left when senior forward Kristen McConkey made a layup. Then, after Heidelberg again cosed to within 34-33, BW went on a 15-0 run to take a 49-33 advantage at 11:30 when Schroeder made a layup.  The Yellow Jackets continued to build their lead and led by as many as 20 points at 67-47 with 26 seconds left when Spisak made a jump shot.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, December 4 when they host non-league foe Kenyon College in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium at 2:00 p.m. Fans can listen to all of the action from that game live on either campus radio station WBW, 88.3 FM, or via the WBW Internet web site at www.wBW.com.

In addition, two Yellow Jacket women's and men's basketball doubleheaders will be telecast on SportsTime Ohio this winter. The games are the January 29, 2011 twinbill versus Wilmington College and the Third Annual Take a Kid to the Game Day doubleheader versus Ohio Northern University on February 19, 2011.
