BEREA, OHIO -- Senior two-time All-OAC guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team lost a heartbreaker to Centre College of Kentucky, 77-76, tonight (Saturday, December 18, 2010) in the first round of the Transylvania University Tournament in Lexington, Kentucky.  BW also plays the host school tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.

In addition to Schroeder for the Yellow Jackets, now 7-2 overall, sophomore wing Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/Hoover) scored 13 points to go along with three rebounds and sophomore guard Olivia French (Bucyrus/Coloned Crawford) added 11 points.  For Centre, now 6-3 overall, junior guard Maggie Prewitt scored 27 points and junior forward Lauren Huter added 26 points as the two leading scorers in the game.

In the first half, BW opened up the scoring, 2-0, on a jumper from Schroeder at the 19:18 mark.  The Colonels evened up the score when Huter hit a jumper with 18:57 to go.  The Yellow Jackets once again took the lead on a jumper from Carpenter at the 18:02 mark.  Centre tied the score, 4-4, following a jumper from Prewitt and then took a two point lead, 6-4, when Huter hit a jumper at the 15:39 mark.

Freshman guard Kristen Troyer (Dover/Garaway) tied the score, 6-6, after making a jumper with 15:24 to go.  The Colonels took the lead after a three pointer from Prewitt but BW bounced back quickly when senior guard Ali Stack (Vermilion/Firelands) converted a three point play by making a  layup and a free throw with 14:08 to go.  Centre took the lead, 12-9, following a three point play of their own as Huter made a layup and a foul shot at the 13:41 mark.  The Yellow Jackets took the lead back, 13-12, with 12:15 remaining following a tip-in from Schroeder.  The Colonels fought back to regain the lead, 23-22, at the 7:42 mark following a layup from senior guard Amanda Stovall.

BW then took the lead for the remainder of the half, 24-23, when Schroeder made a pair free throws with 5:49 remaining.  The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to nine, 34-25, when sophomore guard Megan Frisina (Corry, Pa.) canned a trey with 3:24 to go.

In the second half, Centre opened up with a 6-0 run to cut the BW lead to four, 38-34, when Angela Tronzo made a jumper at the 19:23 mark.  Carpenter ended the Yellow Jacket scoring drought when she made a three pointer at the 18:18 mark to make the score 41-34.  Both teams battled back and forth until the 7:52 mark when the Colonels took the lead, 56-55, after Huter hit a pair of free throws.

Centre extended their lead to eight after Huter converted a three point play the old fashioned way by making a layup and a free throw at the 3:19 mark.  BW cut the lead to one, 77-76, after junior forward Catherine Spisak (Sandusky/St. Mary's Central Catholic) canned a trey with 00:06 remaining in the contest.  The Yellow Jackets then forced a turnover and regained possession with 00:02 left but Carpenter missed a three pointer as time expired.
