Women's Basketball Team Defeats Marietta, 72-33, in Berea to Remain in First Place in the OAC

BEREA, OHIO -- Sophomore guard Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/ Hoover) scored 12 points as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College, 72-33, today (Saturday, January 22, 2011) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center to remain in first place in the OAC.  This was the second of five straight home games for the Yellow Jackets.

With its win, BW is now 13-3 overall and 8-1 in the OAC and one game ahead of second place Ohio Northern University and the University of Mount Union.  BW, which has won three straight and eight of its last nine, plays a rescheduled game versus Mt. Union in Berea on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

In addition to Carpenter for BW, senior 2-time All-OAC guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) had eight points and five rebounds in limited action due to the blowout. The 33 points allowed is the lowest since a 76-25 victory against Pitt-Greensburg in 2006.

For Marietta, now 7-10 overall and 3-7 in the OAC, freshman guard Tori Dixon and sophomore All-OAC forward Aleisha Guiler led the way with nine points apiece.

With her eight points today, Schroeder remained in fourth place on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring list with 1,245 career points and is 64 shy of catching former Academic All-American and BW Hall of Famer Jen Swinehart (1995-99) who had 1,309 points.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead on a layup at the 19:44 mark by Schroeder. Following a 2-2 tie, BW went on a 7-0 run to take a 9-2 lead at the 16:11 mark when junior forward Catherine Spisak (Sandusky/ St. Mary's Central Catholic) made a jump shot.

The Jackets extended their lead to eight points at 12-4 at the 14:25 mark when made a three-pointer. After the Pioneers cut the lead to 12-8, BW scored the next four points to regain its eight point lead at 16-8 with 11:45 left when Schroeder made a layup.

Marietta clawed right back to outscore BW 6-2 to close to 18-14 at the 7:19 mark when freshman guard Tori Dixon made a three-pointer.  But BW came right back to outscore the Pioneers 12-5 to build its largest lead of the stanza at 11 points when sophomore guard Olivia French (Bucyrus/ Colonel Crawford) made two foul shots with 2.5 seconds left.

In the second half, BW opened with a 8-0 run, including six straight points from Carpenter to open a 38-19 lead with 18:16 left in the game.  After Marietta cut the lead to 40-25, BW went on a 6-0 run to increase its advantage to 20 points at 46-26 when senior guard Ali Stack (Vermilion/ Firelands) made two foul shots at 13:02 and sophomore guard Megan Frisina (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area) canned a three-pointer to make it 49-26 at 11:34 to pretty much end matters.
