Men’s Tennis Team Sweeps Pair in Hilton Head

HILTON HEAD, S.C – The Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team swept a pair of matches today on the first day of its annual spring break trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina. The unbeaten Yellow Jackets  (5-0) defeated Gettysburg (Pa.) College, 7-2, and Norwich (Vt.) University, 9-0. The matches were the first two of five on its spring trip.

In its 7-2 win versus Gettysburg (0-4) in the morning, BW gained a 2-1 lead in doubles when the number one duo of senior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC player Jake Elbin (Findlay) and freshman Trey Kernan (Penfield, N.Y.) won, 8-7, and the No.2 tandem on freshman Grant Smith (Dayton Centerville) and junior Academic All-OAC player Michael Benotti (Pittsford, N.Y./ Mendon), won, 8-3. The Jackets also collected four-of-six wins in singles with Elbin winning at No1, 6-3, 3-6 and 1-0 in a tie-breaker; Smith at No.2, 6-2 and 6-2; Benotti at No.4, 6-2 and 6-2, and freshman Anthony Tasatto (Creston/ Norwayne) at No.5, 6-1 and 7-5.

In the its 9-0 shutout victory against Norwich (Vt.) University (2-2) in the afternoon, BW gained a 3-0 lead in doubles and swept the six singles matches to gain the sweep today. In doubles, Elbin and Kernan won, 8-5, at No.1, Smith and Benotti won, 8-2, at No.2, and Tosatto and sophomore Eddie Schartman (Westlake) won, 8-3, at No.3. The singles winners were No.1 Elbin, 6-2 and 6-0; No.2 Smith, 6-1 and 6-2; No.3 Kernan. 6-2 and 6-0, No.4 Benotti, 6-0 and 6-1; No.5 Tosatto, 6-0 and 7-5; and No.6 Schartman, 6-0 and 6-1..

The two wins today also increase veteran Head Coach Brian Rector's career record to 547-115.
