Four Men’s Tennis Student-Athletes Garner ITA Scholar Athletes Accolades

TEMPE, Ariz.  – Four Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis student-athletes have been honored with Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar Athlete honors.

Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC performer Jake Elbin (Findlay) and freshmen Trey Kernan (Penfield, N.Y.), Grant Smith (Dayton/Centerville) and Anthony Tosatto (Creston/Norwayne) are four of the 958 NCAA Division IIII student-athletes to be recognized.

To earn Scholar Athlete status, a player must carry at least a 3.50 GPA for the academic year and have been listed on the institutional eligibility form.

Elbin, who garners his fourth straight accolade, was a sport management major that carried a 3.750 grade point average.  He was a four-time Academic All-OAC selection (two in men's basketball and two in men's tennis), Dean's List student, a Jacket Scholar and a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society.  On the tennis court, Elbin was a four-year letterwinner, a two-year captain and a two-time All-OAC selection.  He ranks tied for 26th in school-history with 56 career singles victories while also recording 45 victories in doubles play.  In basketball, Elbin appeared in 16 games and scored 20 points.

Kernan, who earns his first honor, is a sport management major that carries a 3.671 grade point average.  In his first season, Kernan appeared in two fall tournaments and eight spring matches before the season was canceled due to COVID-19.  He posted a record of 6-2 in singles action and 7-1 in doubles play.  Off the court, Kernan is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and a student-assistant in the Office of Athletic Communications.

Smith, who garners his first accolade, is a neuroscience major that carries a 3.819 grade point average.  In his first season, Smith appeared in eight spring matches before the season was canceled due to COVID-19.  He tallied a record of 6-2 in singles action and 6-2 in doubles play. 

Tosatto, who earns his first honor, is a pre-athletic training major that carries 3.862 grade point average. In his first season, Tosatto appeared in two fall tournaments and eight spring matches before the season was canceled due to COVID-19.  He tallied a record of 4-4 in singles action and 1-5 in doubles play. 

Additionally, the men's tennis team was honored for the ninth time in the last 10 years as an ITA All-Academic Team.  The team was one of 125 teams recognized in Division III as it carried a 3.40 GPA. In order to achieve this honor, a team must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher on a 4.0 scale with all varsity letter winners factored into the team GPA.
