No. 22 Men's Basketball Drops Non-Conference Contest with Hobart (N.Y.)

GENEVA, N.Y. – No. 22 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team dropped a non-conference contest to Hobart (N.Y.) College 68-56, inside Bristol Gym.

BW (2-2) was led by senior two-time Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Michael Quiring (Brunswick) who had 14 points, 12 coming in the second half. Senior forward Tyler Colombo (Strasburg/Tuscarawas Central Catholic) poured in seven and snagged seven rebounds. Freshman guard Jake Snyder (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) recorded seven with four rebounds and two assists. Freshman guard Anthony Mazzeo (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) also pitched in seven, off 60% shooting, and junior guard Matt Dimitrijevs (Broadview Heights/Brecksville Broadview Heights) threw in seven.

For Hobart (2-1), sophomore guard Dan Masino scored a game-high 22 and grabbed 11 rebounds. Freshman forward Daniel Cook contributed with 14.

This defeat brings the overall series record between these two to 2-1, with the last contest in the 1998-99 season, where the Yellow Jackets won 68-65.

Hobart started the contest with a 4-0 run over the first two minutes. The Yellow Jackets answered with a 8-0 run of their own to take a 8-4 lead, capped off with back-to-back threes from Snyder and junior guard Zach Cebula (Brunswick). The Statesmen returned the favor with an 11-6 run of their own to take a 15-11 lead with 8:43 left in the first half. Colombo broke a six minute scoring drought for BW with a spinning layup at 7:29 to cut the Hobart lead to 15-13. The Statesman retaliated with a 6-0 run over the next two minutes to take a 21-13 advantage at 5:11. The Yellow Jackets closed the half with a 6-5 spurt and headed into the locker room down 26-19.  

Quiring got the second half rolling with a trey that shrunk the Hobart lead to 26-22 with 19:09 left to play. BW trimmed the lead to 39-38 at 10:42 with a 16-13 run. The Yellow Jackets tied the game up at 41 at 9:50, after an offensive rebound from senior forward Drew Sova (Chagrin Falls/Kenston), who then kicked it out to Quiring for the wing three. The Statesmen jumped out to a 60-48 advantage after a 19-7 spurt with 3:01 left in regulation. Both squads scored eight points each to close out the final minutes as BW fell to Hobart, 68-56.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Tuesday November, 26 for the OAC opener against No. 18 nationally ranked Marietta College.
