Quiring Reaches 1,000-Point Plateau, Men's Basketball Defeats Capital

BEXLEY, Ohio – On a night when senior two-time Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference point guard Michael Quiring (Brunswick) scored 10 points and etched his name into BW History by surpassing 1,000 career points, the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team edged OAC-rival Capital University, 67-62, inside the Capital Center.

With his 10 points, Quiring is now 40th all-time on the Yellow Jacket career scoring list with 1,014 career points.

BW (13-10 overall, 9-7 OAC) was led by junior guard Luke Schaefer (Medina) as he recorded 17 points off 60 percent shooting, while securing seven rebounds. Freshman guard Anthony Mazzeo (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) pitched in 11 off 3-of-5 from deep and Quiring tallied 10 with a game-high five assists. Senior forwardDrew Sova (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) led the game with nine boards and also registered eight points.

Capital (12-11 overall, 8-8 OAC) was led by senior forward Ganiyu Yahaya with a game-high 19 points, sophomore forward Reed Bradfield had 18 and sphomore guard Tyler Schreck chipped in 11.

BW improves to 55-58 in its all-time series with Capital. The Yellow Jackets have won five of the last seven against the Crusaders, including a victory in last season's OAC Tournament semifinals.

BW established an early, 19-11 lead to open the contest and extended that lead to 15 points at 33-18 with a 14-7 run with just more than five minutes remaining in the first half.  After a 9-4 spurt, capped by Quiring sinking two free-throws to eclipse 1,000-point mark, BW headed into halftime with a 42-24 advantage.

Capital cut the lead to 14 points at 53-39 at the 11:19 mark with a 15-11 run to start the second half. The Crusaders cut the deficit to 10 at 57-47 at the 5:55 mark with an 8-4 spurt and tied the game 62-62 with a 15-5 run with 1:18 left in regulation. The Yellow Jackets scored the final five points of the game to secure the key road victory.

BW wraps up the road schedule with an OAC contest against No. 11 University of Mount Union on Wednesday, February 19. BW returns home to take on Otterbein University for Seniors' Night on Saturday, February 22.
