BEREA, Ohio – The No. 22 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball opened the 2019-20 season with 42-point victory over Bethany (W. Va.) College in a home opening non-conference game by a final score of 95-53 in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center

BW (1-0), who won its ninth straight season opener, had three players score in double figures, led by junior guard Luke Schaefer (Medina), who had a game-high tying 15 points. Senior forward Tyler Colombo (Strasburg Tuscarawas Central Catholic) poured in 13 and grabbed six rebounds. Senior forward Alex Nahra (Mayfield) contributed with 10 off the bench.

Bethany (0-3), who fell to 5-18 in the all-time series against the Yellow Jackets, had one player score in double figures, led by guard Dalton Hemrick, who had 15 points and six rebounds.

BW jumped out to a 13-4 lead on a layup by sophomore guard Shane Zalba (Mentor) at the 15:59 mark. Bethany cut it to seven, 13-20 at 11:25 off a jump shot by Khalil Wilson. The Yellow Jackets lead expanded back to a lead of 30-17 after a three pointer from freshman guard Jake Snyder (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) at 5:45. An 11-7 run gave BW a 41-24 advantage after a Colombo three-point play at 1:34.  The Yellow Jackets went into intermission ahead 42-28.

BW jumped above the 50-point mark with a three pointer from freshman guard Anthony Mazzeo (North Canton/Massillon Jackson), giving them a 52-34 lead with 17:14 left in the second. The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 65-43 after a Colombo layup at 12:02. In the second half, BW extended its lead to as many as 43 points on two occasions with the last coming at 95-52 on layup by Jake Elbin at 1:45.

BW is back in action on Friday, November 15 when it remains at home for a non-conference game against Hiram College at 7 p.m.
