Men's Basketball Upends Bluffton

BLUFFTON, Ohio – In the final game of the McDonald's of Bluffton Holiday Classic, the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team defeated host, Bluffton University, 60-53 inside the Sommer Center.

BW (6-4) was led by junior guard Luke Schaefer (Medina), who scored 10 points and snagged a career-high tying seven rebounds. Senior two-time Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Michael Quiring (Brunswick) chipped in nine and grabbed six rebounds while junior guard Matt Dimitrijevs (Broadview Heights/Brecksville Broadview Heights) also pitched in nine. Freshman guard Anthony Mazzeo (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) and senior forward Alex Nahra (Mayfield) each tallied eight.

Bluffton (5-5) was led by senior guard Andrew Renner, as he recorded a game-high 17 points. Senior center Isiah Taylor was the other Beaver in double-figures, as he threw in 10.

The Yellow Jackets improve to 5-2 in the all-time series with Bluffton.  In the last contest, BW won 78-65 in the 1985-86 campaign.

BW established its first lead of 5-4 at 16:05 with a Quiring three-pointer. The two teams traded baskets and the lead over the next five minutes and 51 seconds, until a layup from senior forward Drew Sova (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) gave the Yellow Jackets an 11-10 advantage at 12:14. With a 15-6 run, BW marked a double-digit lead of 26-16 after a Dimitrijevs trey at 6:46. The Yellow Jackets closed out the half with an 8-6 spurt and headed into halftime up 34-22.

With an 18-6 run, Bluffton tied the game up at 40 with 13:24 left in regulation. BW answered with a 17-7 spurt to retake a double-digit lead of 57-47 at the 2:04 mark. The Yellow Jackets held of the Beavers in the final minutes and came away with the 60-53 victory.

The Yellow Jackets hit the court next at home against Capital University on Friday January, 3 at 7 p.m.
