Yellow Jacket Men's Basketball Comes Up Short in OAC Thriller with No. 3 Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio – Senior guard Justin Roth (Parma) scored 17 points but Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team lost a thrilling Ohio Athletic Conference game to No.3-ranked and undefeated Marietta College, 84-81, in the Ban Johnson Fieldhouse. The game came down to the final 1.7 seconds.

In addition to Roth for BW (13-6, 7-5 OAC), freshman forward Jake Fetherolf (Norwalk) scored 15 points and junior guard Zach Warner (Clyde) came off the bench to tally 14. Marietta (19-0, 12-0 OAC) was led junior guard RaNeal Ewing's game-high 19 points. Overall, five Pioneers scored in double figures. The victory gave the Pioneers a season sweep.

In the first half, Marietta grabbed three early three-point leads before the Yellow Jackets took a 10-9 lead at 15:22 when freshman guard Cameron Kuhn (Vermilion) scored on a short jump shot. The lead grew to 19-16 at 11:01 at 19-16 when junior forward Ryan Walsh (Easton, Pa.) made a jumper.

After a lead change and two ties, Marietta forged its largest lead at 34-29 at 5:08 when junior forward Eddie Grenert made two foul shots. BW outscored the Pioneers 12-2 on the strength of eight Warner points, to take its largest lead of the period at 41-36 with 1:27 left. A MC three-pointer with 50 seconds left before intermission left the Jackets leading 41-39 at halftime.
 
In the second half, BW scored six of the first eight point and gained a 47-41 lead at 17:53 when Fetherolf grabbed an offensive rebound and scored. It was the first of four six-point advantages. BW took its largest lead at 61-53 at 13:04 when Warner canned his third trey of the game.

Marietta then outscored BW 27-13 to take its largest lead at 80-74 at 2:51 when Stevenson made a layup. BW battled back and closed to within three points twice, including with 1.7 seconds left.

After a BW timeout, Marietta called its own stoppage. BW's last chance was a long triple by Roth that hit the front of the rim and bounded away.

BW returns to action on Wednesday, February 4 when the Yellow Jackets host Heidelberg University in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center at 7:30 p.m.
