BW Men’s Hoops Team Loses to JCU, 108-106 in Overtime

BEREA – Senior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) scored a career-high-tying 29 points, but the Baldwin Wallace  University men's basketball team lost to OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University, 108-106 in overtime, in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center.

In addition to Crowe for BW (15-7, 9-6 OAC), freshman guard Cam Kuhn (Vermilion) had 21 points, senior guard Justin Roth (Parma) had 15 and senior forward Matt Dennis (Spring Hill, Fla./ Nature Coast Technical) had 13 . JCU (16-5, 12-3 OAC) was led by junior guard Will Starks' 25 points off the bench.

In the first half, BW gained an early 17-8 lead at 15:24 when junior forward Ryan Walsh (Easton, Pa./ Easton Area) made two foul shots. JCU came back to tie the game at 20-20 at 12;25 and the first of six ties with the last at 30-30 at 8:35 when freshman forward John Cirillo followed a missed shot.

The Blue Streaks gained a 37-31 lead at 6:44 when Cirillo followed another missed shot. The Yellow Jackets followed with a 9-0 run to retake the lead at 40-37 when Kuhn made a three-pointer. JCU outscored BW 14-2 to retake the lead at 51-42 at 1:45 when sophomore guard Tony Vuyunich made his second triple during the run.

BW outscored JCU 8-3 to trail 54-50 at halftime.

In the second half, there were nine lead changes and four ties  before BW took a 82-77 lead at 5:40 when Crowe popped a trey. The game was tied four more times with the last with 37.4 seconds left in regulation when sophomore guard David Linane made two foul shots.

In overtime, JCU gained the edge early when Starks canned a three-pointer at 2:56 for a 100-97 lead. BW got within one point on three separate occasions with the last at 106-105 with 17.5 seconds left when freshman forward Jake Fetherolf (Norwalk) stole the ball and scored.

JCU gained a 107-105 lead when Linane hit one of two foul shots with 8.4 seconds left, but the Blue Streaks grabbed the rebound and BW had to foul. Starks missed both free throws with 7.3 seconds left, but JCU grabbed the rebound again and BW had to foul again. Another JCU foul shot gave them a 108-105 lead with four seconds left.

Then Roth was fouled in what was apparent was a three-shot foul, but the referee called it a two-shot foul with 0.7 seconds left. Roth made the first charity toss and missed the second on purpose. Starks grabbed the rebound to end the game.

BW returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 14 when the Yellow Jackets host OAC rival Wilmington College in the Ursprung Gym in the Higgins Center at 3 p.m. There are three OAC Regular season games left and the 2015 OAC Tournament takes place from Monday, Feb. 23 through Saturday, Feb. 28.
