Roth’s Game-High Helps BW Men’s Basketball Outlast Heidelberg

BEREA, Ohio – Senior guard Justin Roth (Parma) scored a game-high 25 points as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team outlasted Heidelberg University, 74-71, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

Also scoring in double figures for BW (14-6, 8-5 OAC), who snapped a two-game losing streak, sophomore forward Jake Fetherolf (Norwalk) tallied 14 points and freshman guard Cameron Kuhn (Vermilion) contributed 13. Senior forward Matt Dennis (Spring Hill, Fla./Nature Coast Technical) grabbed a game-high tying nine rebounds and had a game-high three blocks.

Heidelberg (8-12, 4-9 OAC) had five players score in double figures led by freshman forward James Hanley with 15 points. Senior center Doug Waldmannstetter recorded 14 points, freshman guard Kiere' Bennett tallied 11 while junior center Jackson Blue and freshman forward Shane Lee each contributed 10. Junior guard Marcquice Taylor grabbed a game-high tying nine rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets opened the game on an 11-4 run on a layup by Dennis at the 16:00 mark. The Student Princes responded with a 17-9 run to take the lead at 21-20 on a traditional three-point play by Hanley at 7:05. BW outscored Heidelberg 15-13 down the stretch to lead 35-34 at the intermission.

The Yellow Jackets opened the second half on an 18-5 run to take a 53-39 lead on a three-pointer by Roth at the 14:19 mark. The Student Princes responded with a 10-4 run to cut the lead down to 57-49 on a jumper by Blue at 9:40. Heidelberg used an 11-6 run to cut the lead down to 63-60 on a triple by Bennett at the 4:41 mark.

The Student Princes cut the lead down to one point at 72-71 on a traditional three-point play by freshman guard Chris Moxley with eight seconds remaining. Roth converted a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining to seal the game at 74-71.

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Saturday, February 7 when they travel to Westerville for a rare weekend night OAC game against Otterbein University in the Rike Center at 7:30 p.m. The next home game is on Wednesday, February 11 when BW hosts OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in the Ursprung Gym at 7:30 p.m.
