Men’s Soccer Drops Season Opener on Day One of Herb Lauffer Tournament

ERIE, Pennsylvania—The youthful Baldwin Wallace University men's soccer team was defeated  by Hiram College, 3-0, on day one of the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament hosted by Penn State-Behrend.

BW, which has 34 freshmen and sophomores among its 41-player roster, began the game wth a strong start as junior forward Ryan Hassell (Southampton, BERMUDA/ Western Reserve Academy) bounced off the right post in the fifth minute and freshman forward Danny Ruple (Berea/ Berea-Midpark) had a shot bounce off a defender in the box and nearly entered the net in the eighth minute.

The Terriers scored the only goal of the first half when freshman forward Tyler Helderman beat the Yellow Jackets goalkeeper to give Hiram a 1-0 lead at halftime.

In the second half, BW put a lot of pressure on the Hiram defense, but Hiram senior midfielder Vaal Ngalla and junior forward Quinn Galecki scored goals in the 80th and 81st minutes, respectively, to put the game out of reach.

In goal, junior Ryan Asbury (Cincinnati/ Turpin) faced 10 Terrier shots and allowed three goals. Hiram outshot BW, 10-8.

On day two of the tournament BW will play the host Penn State-Behrend in the consolation at 5 p.m.
