BEREA, Ohio – The second-seeded Baldwin Wallace University men's soccer team ended its season by falling to the third-seeded Heidelberg University in an Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals game by a final score of 4-3 in double overtime on the Tressel Field inside the Finnie Stadium.
With the loss, the Yellow Jackets (10-10-1) end their season in the semifinals for the third time in the last six seasons. BW lost in the semifinals in 2011 but advanced to the school's first-ever NCAA Division III National Tournament appearance. The Student Princes (12-6-3) will advance to the OAC Tournament Championship on Saturday, November 8 against top-seeded John Carroll University at 7 p.m.
BW jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when senior defender Bill Gamble (Brunswick) headed in the corner kick and assist from Michael Brennan (Akron/Walsh Jesuit) at the 1:26 mark. The Yellow Jackets wasted no time as they picked up their second goal just a minute and half later when senior midfielder Ben Deighton (Richfield/Revere) took the pass from freshman defender David Elsen (Cleves/St. Xavier) and knocked the shot off a Heidelberg defender into the back of the net at three minutes. BW pushed its lead to 3-0 when sophomore forward Craig Wallace (Boxford, Mass/Tiltoa School) took the threw ball from sophomore forward Justin Ball (North Olmsted) and chipped it over the Student Prince goaltender for his second goal of the season at the 30th mark.
Heidelberg scored two goals just 33 seconds apart to to cut the lead down to 3-2 at the 39th minute mark when senior midfielder Tyler Eoff netted both goals off assists from junior forward Chris Koczak and freshman midfielder Alexis Mendoza. The Student Princes tied the game at 3-3 when Mendoza scored the goal off the assist from junior midfielder Kyle Simpson at 84 minutes.
Heidelberg won the game in the second overtime period when Mendoza scored the game-winner of the assist from sophomore defender Kyle Boone.
BW junior netminder Zach Haynes (Medina), who made his sixth straight start and seventh of the season, faced 20 shots; including 11 on-goal, allowed four goals and made seven saves as he dropped his record to 3-4 overall.
The Student Princes outshot the Yellow Jackets by a count of 20-15 but BW held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
