BW Men Beat Houghton (N.Y.) on Deighton's Boot

ERIE, Pa.- -- Baldwin Wallace University senior midfielder Ben Deighton (Richfield/Revere) scored on a penalty kick in the 105th minute of double overtime to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 2-1 win against Houghton (N.Y.) College in the consolation match of the Penn State Behrend (Pa.) University Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament on Saturday evening.

The Yellow Jackets (1-1) opened the tournament with a loss to the host school and moved into the consolation match versus Houghton.  In addition to Deighton, junior forward Jared Abston (Strongsville) also scored.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets played solid defensive for 45 minutes and held the Highlanders to only five shots attempts and no shots on goal.  The game was tied 0-0 at the intermission.

In the second half,  Houghton (0-2) scored the first goal of the match and took a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick in the 60th minute by sophomore midfielder Jesse Toth.  BW answered in the 72nd minute when Abston scored the first goal of his Yellow Jacket career from 18 yards out on a scissor kick shot to tie the game at 1-1.  Junior midfielder Zach Smith (Parma/ Normandy) was credited with the assist.  

After a scoreless first 10-minute overtime session, Deighton scored the game-winning goal to give BW its first win of the season. It also was the 15th goal of his career.

BW will be back in action on Saturday, September 6 when the Yellow Jackets travel to St. Mary's City, Maryland to compete in the St. Mary's College of Maryland Seahawk Classic. In the first round, the Jackets play Salisbury (Md.) University at 4:00 p.m.
