BW Men Shutout Defiance, 2-0; Second Straight Win

BEREA, Ohio -- The Baldwin Wallace University men's soccer team shut out visiting Defiance College, 2-0, Saturday afternoon on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium. The victory was BW's second straight and was highlighted by the first career shutout of freshman goalie Ryan Asbury (Cincinnati/Turpin).

In the first half, neither team was able to find the back of the net and resulted in a scoreless deadlock at the intermission. It was a tough defensive effort by both BW (3-7) and DU (1-8-1).

In the second half, BW gained a 1-0 lead when junior midfielder Zach Smith (Parma/ Normandy) scored his third goal of the season when he placed the ball in the far right corner of the net. Senior midfielder Ben Deighton (Richfield/ Revere) was credited withhis first assists this season.
Freshman midfielder Jose Solis-Flores (Westfield, Ind./ Westfield) made it a 2-0 Yellow Jacket lead when scored BW's second goal of the match and his first collegiate goal at the 63:06 mark. Solis-Flores' goal was kicked into the bottom right corner of the net. Senior forward Cody Smith (Brunswick) was credited on the assist, his first of the campaign.

In goal, Asbury, now 3-5 overall, faced four Defiance shots, including two on-goal, and made a pair of saves en route to his first career collegiate shutout.
In the game, BW outshot Defiance, 15-4, and had 10 corner kicks compared to DU's four.

BW's next game is at Oberlin College on Wednesday, October 1. Kickoff will begin at 7 p.m. BW also plays its Ohio Athletic Conference opener next Saturday at Muskingum University at 1 p.m. and then hosts Heidelberg University in Finnie Stadium on Oct. 8 at 7 pm.
