Baseball Team Sweeps Anderson (Ind.) in Kentucky

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY --  The 19th-ranked (D3baseball.com poll) Baldwin Wallace University baseball team swept a doubleheader against Anderson (Ind.) University at host Spalding (Ky.) University at Derby City Field. The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 10-9, and captured the nightcap, 9-8. BW is en route to the State of Texas on its Annual Spring Break Trip.  The Jackets will play six games in eight dats in Texas.

In the first game, BW (4-3) gained a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first inning. The Yellow Jackets added four more in the third and added one in each of the fifth, sixth and eighth innings to build an 8-0 lead. Anderson (2-3) didn't get its first base hit until the eighth when it scored five to reduce BW's lead to 8-5. The game became a bit tenuous in the ninth when Anderson scored four more and had the tying run on first base. Fortunately junior catcher Aex Marcum (Granville) threw him out at second base while attempting to steal to end the game!

At the plate, BW outhit Anderson, 12-7. Senior pre-season Division III All-American first baseman/ designated hitter Hunter Handel (Akron/ Green) and junior transfer third baseman Kevin Hagen (Brecksville/ Cleveland/ St. Ignatius) led the way with three hits each and junior All-OAC right fielder Cole Nieto (Brunswick/ St. Ignatius) had a pair of hits. Handel was 3-for-5 with one run scored, two doubles, a triple and four runs batted-in. Hagen was 3-for-5 with one run scored and two RBI. Nieto was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. In addition, Marcum was 1-for-3 with one run scored, two RBI and three walks.

On the mound, senior righthander Mark Zimmerman (Akron/ Green) started and gained the win to improve to 2-0 and lower his earned run average to 1.40 this season. He pitched the first seven and one-third inn innings and allowed one hit, two runs (none earned), struck out 10 and walked two He now has 29 strikeouts in 19 and one-third innings pitched (13.27 per nine innings pitched). He was followed to the mound in the eighth by freshman Brandon Lekan (Strongsville), who pitched one-third of an inning, and senior Tom Loeffler (Shaker Heights), who also pitched one-third of an inning. Seniors Brandon Cichocki (Walled Lake, Mich./ Central) and Paul Szabo (Richmond Heights/ Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) combined to pitched the ninth.

In the nightcap, BW scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to gain a 2-0 lead. The lead grew to 4-0 with two more in the third. Anderson cut the BW lead to 4-3 with three runs in the top of the fifth. BW came right back with a pair of tallies in the bottom of the fifth to gain a 6-3 lead. Again, Anderson cut the deficit to 6-4 with a run in the seventh. The Yellow Jackets had a three-run eighth for a 9-4 advantage, but again Anderson came back to make it interesting by scoring four runs in the top of the ninth and lined into a game-ending double play with the bases loaded.

At the plate, BW was outhit, 10-5. Sophomore catcher Trent Kaltenbach (Plain City/ Jonathan Alder) led the way and was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. In addition, Badia and Nieto combined to scored five runs and Marcum had three RBI to raise his season total to a team-high 11 RBI in seven games.

On the mound, senior righty Alex Albright (North Royalton) started and pitched the first five innings and left with a 4-3 lead. He improved to 2-1 this season. Albright allowed four hits and three runs (two earned) and struck out eight and did not walk a batter, but hit two. He was followed by Szabo who pitched the final four innings, allowed six hits and five runs (four earned) and strick out two and walked one to gain his first career save.

BW opens its spring break schedule in Austin, Texas on Monday, March 7 at Concordia (Teaxs) University at 2 p.m. BW plays at Texas Lutheran in Seguin on Tuesday at 2 p.m., plays at Trinity (Teaxs) University in San Antonio on Wednesday at 8 p.m., in Belron, Texas against host Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday at 7 p.m. and ends its trip with two games on Saturday, March 12 versus DeSales (Texas) University at 2 p.m. and host Mary Hardin-Baylor at 5 p.m.

The northern schedule begins on Saturday, March 19 when BW travels to Terre Haute, Indiana to play single games against host Rose-Hulman (Ind.) Institute of Technology at 11 a.m. and versus Illinois Wesleyan at 2 p.m. The 2016 home-opener on Wednesday, March 23 versus Ohio Wesleyan University at Fisher Field at 4 p.m. The 2016 OAC schedule begins on Friday, March 25 with a doubleheader at OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University at 1 p.m. In addition, BW will dedicate Fisher Field on Saturday, April 23 prior to its 1 p.m. doubleheader versus OAC-rival Capital University.

The past two seasons, BW has appeared in the NCAA Division III National Tournament, including the school's first-ever Division III College World Series appearance in 2014.
