MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball split a non-conference doubleheader at Allegheny (Pa.) College at Robertson Field. The Gators scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth of the first game to win, 6-5, and the Yellow Jackets captured the nightcap, 5-1.
In the opener, BW (8-11) scored single runs in the top of the third and fourth innings, respectively, to build a 2-0 lead. Allegheny (5-7) scored once in the bottom of the fifth and four more in the eighth to lead 5-2 entering the ninth. The Yellow Jackets scored three times in the top of the frame to tie it at 5-5, but a walkoff double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth ended the game and gave AC its win.
On the mound, junior right-hander Logan Heffernan (Lebanon) made his fourth appearance of the season and first start. He pitched the first six innings, allowed six hits and one unearned run, struck out five and walked one Gator as he received a no-decision. He was relieved by freshman Danny Cody (Brecksville-Brecksville-Broadview Heights) in the seventh. Senior Brandon Cichocki (Walled Lake., Mich./ Central) pitched a scoreless eighth. He allowed a hit and struck out two. Senior Alex Albright (North Royalton) pitched in the ninth and took the loss to fall to 3-2 this season.
At the plate, sophomore third baseman Spencer Badia (Bellaire), senior four-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference shortstop Mark Zimmerman (Akron/ Green) and freshman Reese Albright (North Royalton) each had two hits. Badia was 2-for-4 with a double, run scored and run batted-in (RBI). Zimmerman was 2-for-5 with a run scored, RBI and a stolen base. Reese Albright was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
In the nightcap, BW grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first and the Gators made it 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the second. The Yellow Jackets increased their lead to 5-1 with three runs in the seventh. BW had a chance to break the game open but left the bases loaded in both the eighth and ninth innings.
On the mound, freshman righty Brandon Lekan (Strongsville) pitched the first eight innings to gain his first collegiate victory and improve to 1-2 this season. He allowed five hits and one unearned run, struck out seven and walked a pair. Senior Tom Loeffler (Shaker Heights) pitched a scoreless ninth inning. He allowed one hit and struck out one.
At the plate, senior Academic All-OAC centerfielder John Taylor (Stow/ Hudson) was the only Jacket with two hits. He was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI. Zimmerman was 1-for-5 with a team-high three RBI.
